My sister and I have decided to get my mother a Kindle for Christmas. Does anyone know of any deals or codes that I should use to get the best price. It is a bit over our budget, but it is definetely the best present we can get her. Any help will be greatly appreciated. (I'll be gone for a bit but I will be back later to read/respond) TIA.

I got the newer one for my dh for his birthday this summer. Far more than I usually spend. I knew it was something he'd been wanting for some time. I got him the newest one because of some features. I can tell you that he loves it. Probably the best I've gotten him. He was so surprised. It was something he secretly wished for. I don't know of any discounts unless ebates has a rebate one, but good luck!

I've never seen a deal on a new kindle, however Amazon will occasionally sell a refurbished one for a lower price. There's a kindle 2 available right now for $219. I believe they have the same one year coverage that a 'new' kindle does but you may want to call amazon customer service to double check. Just type 'kindle 2 refurbished' into the amazon search engine. :goodvibes

The Kindle and Sony reader are like the WII and PS in that they are price controlled. Everyone has them for the same price. Look for free shipping.

My dh said to mention that it does take some tech savvy to use it. Make sure your mom is comfortable with the technology.

I bought the first edition Kindle, from Amazon, late this summer...and as soon as I purchased it for $199.00, they lowered the price to $149.00 because the newer version was coming out. I'm 62 and the 1st edition is definitely enough technology for me. If your mom is going to use it exclusively for reading, the 1st edition is more than enough. I love mine!!

Thanks for all the responses. Not that my mother can't be techno savvy, she chooses not to be, so I think I will look at the 1st. edition. She really doesn't need the bells and whistles, just some company during the night.

My mom had the first edition and had to switch to the newer one. There are a few additions that make it nicer according to her. I'd go ahead and get the newer one (not the giant $400. one, just the newer smaller one). HTH

I think the font size would be important. Not sure if there is a difference between models on this. I'm saying this as a 41 year old who is starting to need reading glasses. Larger print is helpful to me so I don't need my otc glasses.

I totally understand what you are saying. I am forever putting on/taking off my glasses. My Mom uses bifocals and is very much used to them.

So I started checking on prices and it is much harder to find the 1st. generation and they are going for as much if not more than the current generation. I guess I am now switching gears to the second generation. The really large one is very expensive and looks "off" to me. So that is not in the running. When I watched the video for the second version it did show them changing the font to a larger size. So that should work. Now if I could just find it in my price range.

Ebay is an option, but I am always so afraid to get "duped".

Oh, the joys of Christmas:rotfl2:, gotta love it.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've been waiting for a discount on the Kindle too. My brother and I are getting it for my mom. I went ahead and got her the $219 Kindle 2 refurb yesterday.

So...I'm thinking that they will probably put them on sale today, that's my luck!

Sorry, that would be good for me though:lmao:. I am sure she will love it!

Get the clip-on light, if she reads before bed, just for a bit extra light.

You can change font size; hubby has a Kindle 1 and does it easily, I have access to the international version that just came out (very helpful that hubby does product testing for them ;)) and can change font size.

Be very wary on ebay. There's a a seller who has had waaaaay too many kindles for sale. The wireless feature (whispernet) doesn't work, and and he's marketing them as without wireless. If the deal's too good to be true, it probably is unfortunately. Good luck, the lowest I've seen is the $219 refurb from Amazon, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Your mom should love it. :goodvibes

My brother and I gave one to my mom for her birthday. Make sure to tell your mom about all of the free books. My mom almost returned hers because she thought all the books cost $9.99. She loves it now :) She did need the clip-on light and a case for it. She said holding it in a case makes it feel more like she's holding an actual book.

We are a 2 Kindle 2 family.
I bought mine first because I'm an avid reader. I ordered mine in June (using the points in my MyPoints account) and paid the rest.
At the time I ordered it, it was $359. I used $125 in Amazon.com gift cards from MyPoints (took the cost down to $234). Then, within a month of my purchase, Amazon lowered the price to $299. I called their Customer Service and explained that as the price had been reduced within 30 days of my purchase- I should be refunded the difference. They agreed, so my purchase price became $174 after the $60 credit to my cc.

Bought DHs a couple of months later, after he'd played with mine and liked it so much I almost didn't get it back! Paid $299 for it, but had some rebate $$ hanging around from my rebate websites, so his was discounted too!

You don't have to be a super-techie to use it, if I can use it- anyone can! I don't have the light- but I do have a case for it, and DH does too.

What a great idea for a gift!! And there's TONS of free books on Amazon.com, so she won't bust her budget!!

I have mypoints available. I will need to check how much. Great idea.

They have two values available usually. $50 and $25 and possible even $10. Every little bit helps- and it was a clincher for me- I wasn't using them too often, and had enough available to put the Kindle into my budget. Neither one of us regret it either!

I'm at Amazon regularly looking for new free books, and are sending them to both of our Kindles all the time!
