DD is having her 10th bday party tomorrow. We were going to spend a lot of the time outside--we have a great park across the street with trails etc and the kids are all bringing their scooters or rollerblades. The plan was to go there, play on our new playsystem in the backyard, grill out etc.

Now, it looks like rain so I have to come up with other stuff to do for 2 hours. There are 5 girls and one boy coming ranging in age from 8-11. So, I don't want totally girly stuff like beading necklaces, though the boy is a trooper and likes basic craft stuff.

I had already planned on having them do a birthday word search as kids arrived, but am totally blanking on what else to do.

Help??

wrap up some sort of prize, put it in a larger box, then tie it up with clothesline type rope. Lots of knots. Then sit kids in a circle, and play music while the box is passed from one to another. when the music stops whoever is holding the box gets 1 minute to start getting it open. Oh yes, they have to have oven mitts on their hands. they start passing again after the minute is up leaving the box as is. whoever actually finishes the unwrapping gets the prize.
Always worked with Cub Scouts.

Love it!!

Anyone else have some ideas for me? This could be a long two hours!

We had to make a last minute "change of activities" for my DD's b-day back in April. (We were going to go to the movies, and pick up a pizza and then sleepover. Unfortunately, the movies that weekend just sucked)

I would love to take credit for this idea, but I got it from another DIS'er.

The kids can "make their own pizza" We started with the pillsbury pizza dough (near the cinnamon rolls and crescent rolls in the refrigerated food section). I prebaked the crusts, according to the directions, then each kid made their own pizza.

While we had cheese, sausage, pepperoni, olives, and onions - everyone made a pepperoni pizza. The kids really had fun with this!

Good Luck!!!

That sounds like fun! I want to try it now!!

What about some kind of quiz like "How Well do you know the birthday girl?" with questions about her? I went to a neighborhood wedding shower and they did that. The neighbor kids seemed to like it.

Hmmm...
Have them make smores on your indoor smore maker?
Run to Walmart and grab some cheap t shirts and paint and sponges.Cut the sponges into shapes and have the kids stamp T shirts.
Play Twister or monopoly

Put on some Island Music, take out the broom and have a limbo contest

Get bananas, cherries, sprinkles, fudge, strawberry, caramel, ice cream and whipped cream and have kids make sundaes or banana splits

Make a treasure map and hide a booty for them to find using clues

If you have Comcast there is free Karaoke on Demand

Get foam cut out supplies at craft store and make doorhangers, visors etc

Rent Grease and take out old records, have kids dress 50's style and have a sock hop dance if you have the space for something like that

Buy sand at craft store, rinse out soda bottles, babay food jars or water bottles. Use funnel and straws to have kids make sand art in a bottle

:rotfl: :rotfl: Well the follow up to that tag was that the stupid thing doesn't work worth a darn! I had bought it for myself about a week before Christmas, thus the tag, but it is sadly quite disappointing.

You have some awesome ideas! I like the quiz thing too. I don't think we'll make pizzas as I don't want to do that much shopping tomorrow, but the sundae bar thing sounds really good. We did that at one of my kids' family parties in the last year, but that was a lot of little kids. Older self sufficient kids is more appealing.

I just found dozens of the smore makers at Special Thoughts outlet. Now I am glad I didnt buy one. Hope your party is a blast1 :wizard:

My 12th b-day is on Wednesday and I'm skipping the second last day of school to go on a shopping spree with my mom :)
Here are some ideas:
Tye-dye bandanas
Buy plain white t-shirts and have everyone sign them and write messages (this can be a great substitute for a gift bag)
Play some music and have a contest to see who blows the biggest bubble
Play hide and seek, the person who is it the least wins a prize
Have a scavenger hunt in the house (make even teams, 3 teams of two, or Two teams of three- the first team to finish win prizes).

You need to get this at a special store, like party packagers: They put something like a beanie baby (you can get a soccer player one, girls and boys like soccer) and put it in a big balloon! Then it is up to the kids to pop the balloon. The person who pops it wins the prize inside (ex. beanie baby).
