We had a Simplicity for years that I absolutely loved!!! The attachments were so easy to use, and it worked great on tile and hardwood floors. But, unfortunately, it died, and I bought a vacuum cleaner from Target - honestly, can't think of the name right now - but it was only about $50. We are building a new house, and there will be absolutely no carpet - only tile and hardwood flooring. This new vacuum cleaner is the pits when it's not on carpet. It picks up great, but when I switch over to the floor, it spits stuff out the back. It does have a "floor" setting, but it obviously doesn't work right. And, I really don't like the attachments either - so on the hunt for a new one.

So, my question is - I need a vacuum cleaner that will work correctly on hardwood and tile flooring, but I also want one with attachments that aren't a pain to use (so, not wanting a Dyson :) ) Any recommendations?

I have a Kirby and absolutely love it. Yes it is expensive, but well worth the money. I have had mine for 15 years and it still works as good today as it did the day I bought it!

My parents have had an electrolux for over 40 years, same one, its a canister type. Works really good. Its a little ugly after all these years, but its a vacuum cleaner! This one is also pricey.

If it's all tile and hardwood you might consider a canister. I understand Miele makes good canister vacs that are great for allergy sufferers, but they're pricey.

Maybe consider a shop wet/dry vac?

Thanks for the tips. I've never had a canister vacuum. Do they seem bulky?? We do have a shop vac now, but it is a mess after using it to clean up all the construction mess. I guess I should add that the ease of the attachments is really my MAIN thing. I've got an IRobot that I love, and it works great on the floors, but obviously I need a regular vacuum too for when it needs to be done faster. I do have one of the stick vacuums (basically a dust buster on a stick) that I use for keeping up with the dog hair. So, I guess between the two of those things, the attachments is what I'm really lacking on. I need something for the ceiling fans, blinds, etc.

We have a central vac and love it! It has a 20ft hose that connects to either a floor brush for the hardwoods or a power head for the carpets.

One thing about canisters is the heads are easier to get into places uprights can't. You don't have to move as much furniture (chairs, tables etc) as you do with a upright. Just make sure any brand you get has rubber wheels so as to not scuff up your hard floors.

Good luck! :thumbsup2

We just bought a VAX x5 so I can't give you a long term opinion on it, but after 2 months, so far, so good. We have hardwood in the main living area, carpet in the bedrooms. The vacuum has a switch right on the handle that lifts the beater bar so it's easy to go from wood to carpet.

How about looking up Consumers Reports?
They give good advice on electronics and many other things.
The advice is top notch.

I am in need of recommendations for a new canister vacuum. I went to Consumer Reports, but of course, I do not want to sign up for a fee to get some info.

Can anyone help on what type of canister vac they have recently purchased?

Thanks! :goodvibes

We got a Riccor about 2 years ago. It is wonderful, but expensive. It may last 10-15 years though if you do regular mainenance.

I've also had really good luck with Oreck canister vacs.

Miele has a pretty good small canister for people without large areas of carpet. Kenmore isn't bad either for a more decent price.

One word...ELECTROLUX!!!!! I have had one for years (I get my mom's old ones!) and when the last one I had konked out (I think it was 20 yrs old!) we finally decided to have a central vac installed!! It is AWESOME!!! I have a labrador retriever (translation:tons of dog hair!) and I had a "dustpan" outlet installed as part of the central vac. It is a little opening under the cabinet with a little switch- just push with your toe to turn it on, sweep dog hair, etc in -WA LA! Whoosh! It is such a beautiful thing!!!!:yay:
