Help, 1st go-around on this, don't want to mess up.

*Have contract XXX.0 for VWL & add-on thru DVC, XXX.1 for BWV, same Oct. UY.

*Want to purchase points/transfer from member for DS's honeymoon Jan. '07 in BWV in order to have 11 month availability.

*Don't want to borrow my own points, & probably will purchase more @ same time for myself.

Called MS, CM said I have to purchase ONLY BWV points (bankable ok, as long as they're valid when I want to use in '07).

I thought I could buy any points w/appropriate UY and they'd "magically" become my home resort...or in my case, I could designate which resort I'd want them deposited into (BWV)?

True or False?

The way it is supposed to work is that the points that are transferred in should maintain their resort. So if you rented OKW points to transfer in and wanted them to be linked to your BWV contract, those points should not give you the 11-mo window at BWV. However, some have posted that they have been able to do this. I wouldn't necessarily rely on that info.

I would try to find someone renting BWV points in order to avoid any possible problem.

Good luck.

Nutz! A curve-ball...., wonder if it depends on which CM you deal with?

The CM told you the rule - transferred points retain the original home resort. Yes, apparently the system doesn't properly track home resort of transferred points and so some people may choose to takke advantage of that. IMHO, those who do, are really taking advantage of their fellow DVC members. (I don't think you would knowingly do that).

Since you know you want the 11 month window at BWV and already have a BWV contract, just find some BWV points that can be transferred to you. End of problem.

Best wishes -

Unfortunately, it seems everytime I do try to "bend" the rules for anything, I get caught with my hand in the cookie jar.;) Your points are safe with me...have to adjust my game plan.

Just FYI, the points are flagged i your account as transfer points. If you receive BWV points, you will be in the clear using them at 11 months, since they will check out the original home resort of the transferred points.

I have received four different point transfers into my account over the past few years. In most cases I have used the transfer points within the 7 month mark, so home resort did not matter. But for our Presidents' Day ressies at VB this year, I wanted to make doubly sure that we would get what we wanted (our home resorts are BWV and SSR). So I got ahold of some VB points and made my ressies at 11 months. When I called MS they reminded me that I had no VB points (at least on the surface); I reminded them that X number of transfer points in my BWV account were VB points and that these could be used to secure the ressie; they dug deeper and discovered that this was in fact true and did a manual override to make the ressie. If I had been trying to make a BWV ressie with those points at 11 months, MS would have seen the "transfer" flag on the transferred points and dug down to ensure that they were in fact BWV points.

Sure you might get away with using any old transfer points, but I expect you would not succeed, as the points would be flagged. Best to restrict your search to BWV points.

Good luck!

Hi CarolMN: Thanks, that was a good explanation. How does use year play into this? I have never transferred any points in or out, but I imagine that you must be sure that the points will still need to have some "life" left on them in order to be used. Thanks, Matt :earsboy:

If you are looking for points to transfer into your account, you need to look fr points that will be valid for the dates of your vacation. They do not have to be the same use year as the points in your account. You would tell MS the dates you want to use the points and the CM will put them in the proper use year.

For example, let's say your use year is February and mine is August. You need points for an July 2006 stay. Points for that stay fall within your 2006 use year, but my 2005 use year. If I were to transfer points to you from my 2005 use year, MS would put them in your 2006 use year. The CM can do that because our use years overlap.

Bottom line: Look for points that will be valid for yor desired vacation dates and tell MS when you want to use the points when you call to do the transfer. MS will help you figure everything out.

in response to this, I just called MS, and they told me that in transferring points, the use years must be parallel, so to speak. In other words, if I am transferring 2005 points (i have a december use year) into someone else's account, these points can ONLY go into their 2005 use year. If I transfer 2006 points, they can only go into someone else's 2006 year and so on. I am a little confused.

She said that since someone else's 2005 year may be over, that they wouldn't be able to use my 2005 points???????????

This didn't make any sense to me at all.

Is there a renting/selling/transferring for dummies site?

Can anyone answer this? I don't want to make a transfer for it not to be available to the transferee.

Thanks

Called MS again (embarrassing!). Got a helpful CM who actually did a "pretend" transfer to see how it actually worked...

He said that when you own multiple home resorts, under 1 contract No., you must designate which account you want them to go into @ time of transfer. In my case either BWV or VWL - both have same UY.

He did warn me about making sure that the seller/transferee's points either are good for the dates we want to book or bankable to the date we want to use. In my case for Jan '07, I can look for either an '05 August or later UY - as long as I'd bank all by the 6 month mark for 100%.

I'd call regarding the 05 into 05, I assumed that was a given.

I was also cautioned about being careful with the money aspect & that you can't both bank & borrow into the same year.

This is a great thread - I have nothing to add - but I just had to say.......
The title made my afternoon!!!!!!!! :flower:
