whew thanks I could have sorn that is what she told me :) Thanks :)

You don't "NEED" a passport but IMO it really makes life easier. More durable than a birth certificate and to me it seems to speed up security at airports. Since they're good for 10 years (for adults) it was well worth the money for me.

I was not worried about the $$ of one but the time frame to get it. How long does it normally take to get one?

You do NOT need passports. If you're sure you have the correct birth certificates (not hospital certificates) you'll be fine. Use your money for something fun on the ship instead. :teeth:

They will tell you about 6 weeks, but we had ours back in less than 3. They are an easy way to travel.

Since 9/11 travel documents have come under closer scrutiny and many islands that only required BC's before are going to start requiring Passports. You do not need them now but everyone should start thinking about getting them.

I think this is just a sign of the times and in the future a passport will be required for all travel outside of the U.S.

We all have passports and it was well worth the money invested...I even take mine as ID when I travel within the U.S.

And, hey, if I ever need to jet off to Europe last minute...I am all set!!!

I really think the cruise industry need to move to just accepting passports. It makes life so much easier, lessens people's stress over all the birth certificate issues, etc. Sure you need a BC to get a passport but you won't be heading to the ship wondering IF your BC will work.

The answer really depends on your citizenship and residency. (Some folks on this board assume that everyone who reads this board is a U.S. citizen, and answer passport questions accordingly.)

Here's the current, official word at the official DCL website:

What documentation do I need to bring?
All U.S. and Canadian citizens must travel with proof of citizenship, which is a valid passport, original, state-certified birth certificate and picture identification, or a certified naturalization certificate with a picture identification. Acceptable forms of picture identification are state or provincial driver's license, or federal, state, province or local government photo I.D. card. Guests age 17 and under who are U.S. or Canadian citizens are only required to have proof of citizenship, excluding picture identification. These guidelines are based on U.S. government regulations which are subject to change at any time. It is the Guest's responsibility to check with their Travel Agent, government agencies, embassies or consulates prior to their vacation to ensure that they have proper documentation. Any Guest traveling without proper documentation will not be allowed to board the vessel and no refund of cruise fare will be issued.

New security guidelines require all adult Guests to show a picture I.D. to embark and disembark the ship in all ports, including Castaway Cay. Please be advised that anyone under the age of 18 wishing to go ashore unaccompanied will be required to have a consenting parent, guardian or other responsible adult with them at the gangway, to provide their signature as authorization.

What if I'm not from the U.S. or Canada?
All Guests who are not U.S. or Canadian citizens must have valid passports and necessary visas at time of embarkation. Travel documents required throughout the vacation are the responsibility of the Guest. Please consult with your Travel Agent, government agencies, embassies or consulates to determine necessary documentary requirements. For all non-U.S. citizens, including Canadian citizens, travel documents will be collected at check-in by a Disney Cruise Line representative and a receipt will be issued for presentation to Immigration Inspectors upon return to Port Canaveral. Any Guest traveling without proper documentation will not be allowed to board the vessel and no refund of cruise fare will be issued.

This is true, but hopefully a TA or DCL won't tell a non-US or Canadian citizen they only need a BC and photo ID.

Made the assumption that Long Island was in the United States...silly me.

Yeah it is LMAO hahahaha

These days I strongly recommend a Passport for anyone who travels with kids, even if just domestically.
It just makes things easier.
Same with a credit card, you can travel without one, but it sure makes things easier.
