I am having a tough time deciding on where to stay (family of 5) where we can get the most out of our time there. We want to be able to be near the pier and beaches and stay somewhere with a pool since we will be there beginning of October, do people swim in the ocean at that time of year? I keep looking at all the hotels and the map for distance but I need some been there done that advice from someone. We don't want to spend more then $200 a night also. Any help would be appreciated, we will be there 3 nights also. Kids are 9, 7 and 4. :) Thanks!

Have you thougt about Huntington Beach? We have only driven thru Newport but HB has a Hyatt and Hilton across the street from the beach. It is only about 30 minutes north of Newport.
I believe there are a couple of more hotels along the beach. We went in mid-October a couple of years ago did spend all day at the pool. It was too windy for our taste to sit by the Ocean. Both hotels are a 15 or so minute walk to a bunch of restaurants and the HB pier.
