Okay I am offer different soulation. I would go on amazon.com they had smartphones for 19.95 . You do not have activate the phone for service at all. You can strictly use as simple and cheap as ipod touch. Also any android device you can download groove lite and use as wi-fi only phone. Yes can make phones calls for free.

I've never heard of groove lite so can't comment on if it works or not. However, OP does not want to pay the $15 per day for wifi and she wants to have it available while away from the hotel so this won't quite work for her situation, it's a good solution though!

Does the hotel have a business center where you can use Wi-Fi for free? Most hotels do, then you could just pop down there to look up whatever you need in just a few minutes. I wouldn't rush to buy a phone just for Wi-Fi on vacation. You can vacation without the internet...you might enjoy it.

OP, if your kids have an old smartphone laying around unactivated, you can use this the same way. Use it only on Wifi at free places or pay for the internet service for the wifi at the hotel. DH uses my old smartphone like this.

Wouldn't it just be cheaper in the long run to just pay the $15 wifi fee for the hotel? Or get a reservation that includes the wifi (sometimes cheaper rate with internet included.) Or try to go to McDonalds or somewhere that has free wifi??

We went to Disneyland Paris in May and our dataplans didn't work (or would have been really expensive). We just went to McDonalds in Disney Village every day to quickly check on things using their free wifi.

Do you think you need the smart phone for travel plans, etc? If so, just print out maps or whatever ahead of time. Or go to AAA and get a triptik and maps.

With all due respect, this is the budget board, and you know this answer's coming:

You want a smart phone.
It would be convenient to have a smart phone for this trip.
You don't actually need a smart phone.

Ignore the few days you'll be on vacation, and and ask yourself the real question, "What phone would be best for my everyday life?"

Let's get down to it. None of us NEED Disney, NEED modern plumbing, NEED a 2500 square foot bedroom house or NEED cake on our birthdays. But many of us want those things and they make our lives better. The Budget board helps us with the getting of those things in a sensible, responsible manner for the best price possible and to know when our wants exceed our needs.

Of course, OP doesn't NEED a smartphone, but it will make her trip better, and it isn't a want that exceeds her needs, hence she posted on the Budget board Only she knows if the hassle is worth the want.

I just have to say, though, what a neat idea to buy an unlocked phone and then just use wifi!

Whoa, wait, what? Have you been to a third world country? Or even rural America? Modern plumbing is a NEED, not a want. After the earthquake in Haiti most of the deaths and illnesses were caused by unsanitary conditions. Those conditions would be lack of modern plumbing.

Do you need a gold plated swan fountain into a marble tub? No, but you do need modern plumbing.
