I need to find a good deal on a new, nearly new or refurbed macbook pro. My son's was stolen while he was studying for finals in the library. Does anyone have one for sale or know of a good deal on these anywhere? I have already looked at the apple refurb site, 15 percent off is the best they can do, really bad timing so hoping to do better. Thanks for any suggestions

I don't have advice on buying one, but check with your homeowner's policy. Sometimes thefts are covered, even if it's outside the home. Also, if the item was purchased with a credit card, they sometimes insure the item against damage...not sure if theft would apply, but it wouldn't hurt to call and ask.

Your homeowners will cover this. Or if you rent, your renter's insurance. You probably have replacement cost, to purchase an equivilent model.

If you bought it with a credit card, you might have purchase protection on it.

I know someone who bought through the Apple Refurb store and were very happy with the price and the quality. I think they even got the Apple Care plan, but I could be wrong.

Is there a particular reason he needs a MBP? I made it through a relatively intensive communications program (photo, video, etc) using a Dell XPS and later a unibody macbook, and occassionally using the computer lab as necessary. The Dell was a graduation present, the Mac I purchased on my own. If he's set on getting a Mac, a Macbook will be a more economical (though less "sexy") option provided he doesn't need the processor. My parents certainly wouldn't have been jumping to buy me a new laptop if I had lost or had mine stolen!

A PC would be even cheaper if he just needs something to "get work done now". Of course, the computer lab is the cheapest and gives you time to hunt, though it's also the least convenient - though most of us found we were most productive in a lab anyway!

Apple refurb may be one of the best deals, and it comes with the same protection as new.

cowboom.com has a great price on a macbook. looks like some of the deals are for today. this is a best buy affiliated site.

I just got the cnet cheapskate deal email saying Apple had a refurb Macbook air for $699. Said due to that price it would probably sell out quickly.
