I'm a little new to this whole posting so please bear with me ! But I would like a little info before I purchase - I have two questions I hope someone can help me with:

1. Say I buy 150 points bank them for one year and have 300 BUT where I want to stay I need 350 .... How do I go about it - WILL I be able to pay a cash differance ? Or do I need to rent points - and where can i get them from are they avlb ???????

2. If I buy at say the wilderness lodge - but really want to stay at Beach Club - what are my chances of getting accomd at the beach club? Right now I see the offerings for resale seem a better point deal at some of the other resorts like Vero, wilderness lodge - BUT I really want the Beach Club. I have a family of 5 so I need to find the best points value and my fear is that I'll buyat say Wilderness but never be able to get a room at Beach club ??

sORRY FOR SUCH DUMB QUESTIONS BUT YOU GUYS SEEM TO KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT. hOPE YOU CAN HELP. i CAN'T WAIT TO BUY

You can borrow them from the third year. That would leave you with 100 points in your next use year. You could rent points from the rent/trade board but why do that if you have your own to borrow? Borrowing points costs nothing and is worth doing for a situation like you describe.

If you really want the BCV, then spend a couple of extra bucks and buy the BCV. Figure out what the difference is and divide that by the 37 years left on the contract. It's not that much. Buy where you want to stay.

Of course if you do buy at another location, watch out for Maintenance fees(sometimes the cost per point is less, but the maintenance fees are higher like VB).

Generally if you buy at the VWL and want the BCV, you shouldn't have a problem but you could run into one. You get an 11 month reservation window at your home resort and have to wait until 7 months for the others. For busy DVC times of the year, you will have a problem switching to the BCV.

Welcome to the Dis-Boards. There are no dumb questions. We are all here to support each other, so ask away.

HBC answered you pretty well...Just wanted to say I agree, if you really would prefer to stay most often at BCV's, rule around here on these boards is to buy where you think you'd want to stay the most. The 11month window depending on time of year, villa size and how flexible you are (or dissappointed you'd be if you couldn't get what you want) is important especially if you will have any restrictions on when you'll be able to visit due to having to follow school vacations and such. For some they have no problem owning at say VWL as you suggested for example and being able to switch over to BCV's at 7mos but for others they have done just that and found they have had great difficulty in booking because they are trying for example to book BCV's during Food-n-wine fest when availibility is nill once you hit the 7month mark.
In cases like that those extra 4months are crucial.

The banking and borrowing will work great for you by the way if you only intend to visit every few yrs - lots of members do just that. Once you run out of points though, they don't just offer them for cash rental so that's something you may want to keep in mind. You can bank 1yrs worth of points and borrow up to 1 yr ahead but that is it...you'd need to wait until you are eligible for that 4th yr again before having access to those points. (hope that makes sense). You cannot just "rent" extra points needed if you're out from MS (although you can buy add-on contracts that will give you a whole new alotment extra points every year). Your best bet IMO would be to figure out exactly how many points you think you'd need for the size villa you'll most often use (I'd think in your case a 2bdrm) and just make sure you purchase enough points to cover it that you won't run short. I'd make sure you had say enough points to cover 1 full week in a 2bdrm at BCV's for the highest season - that way you are covered no matter what time of year you stay and just make sure of how often you will stay (every year, every 3 yrs ).

HTH's -- WELCOME TO THE DIS! the only dumb question is the question not asked , so ask away:wave:

Because both VWL and BCV are the smaller DVC resorts, you will want to have the 11 month advantage at the one you plan to visit most during high DVC occupancy times. Just remember that DVC members like to travel at a bit different times than the population in general. For example, DVC will fill up quickly and early in the booking windows for early December and most of October.

The most popular resort is BWV, and I ALWAYS go at the busiest times of the year--I'm a teacher--so sometimes I have to stay at one of the other resorts when I make ressies 3 or 4 months ahead, as I did at Christmas. I stayed at WLV, and it was wonderful! However, if you are going to get REALLY upset if you can't stay at BCV whenever you call for ressies, then suck it up and pay the extra $400 or so and buy at BCV. If you are one of those kind of people, you won't be happy with DVC unless you get EXACTLY what you need in order for you to get your ressies at BCV. :D

ill add three cents too.........always buy where you can see yourself most content regardless of point price. Second, with a family of 5 a strong recommendation is to buy at least 160 points because as of right now 160 points will get you a one bedroom at any DVC resort in the whole DVC collection. It wont in peak times but will most times. A family of 5 will not be comfortable in a studio for a week in my view.
