Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out...
My DS is going on a canoeing trip this summer in Algonquin Provincial Park.
It is a long trip and the first time he will be with a big group on his own.
I was wondering if there is anyone familiar with the park and if there are accomodations for families in the park. We were thinking of taking a family vacation up there while he was on the trip. Does anyone have any info. they could share with me on this? I would so appreciate it!

We camp at Algonquin every summer. The lodges inside of Algonquin Park are pretty pricey. We stayed in a motel in Whitney once and it was very reasonable, there are 2 or 3 there. Whitney is 5 minutes from the East Gate and Huntsville is about 30-45 minutes from the West Gate. The highway running through the park is 56 km long. There are a couple little towns not far from West Gate that have several different cottage resorts that would be much cheaper than in the park itself. I'm assuming if your son is going on a canoing trip, that he will be interior camping or are they staying in a campground and just doing day trips? It is a beautiful place and he will love it :thumbsup2

We stay at Foxwood Resort every summer. www.foxwoodresort.ca
There are a few other resorts on the same lake (we're on Lake of Bays) and on the various rivers around the area. You may want to find out what area of Algonquin your son will be in (it really is huge) and feel free to call Rob at Foxwood for recommendations even if his resort doesn't work. He took us canoeing in the park last summer and there is a great rental place for everything you would need for any outings you may want to try.

I've been there quite a few times and the park is huge! So beautiful. I grew up in Northern Ontario though so I'm not too sure about accomodations in the area.

Algonquin Park is a favourite of ours. We canoe there a couple of times a year.

If you want to stay inside the park, there are three lodges that I know of. I'd rate all three of them as: stunningly expensive.

There are accommodations on either side of the park. I'd classify the West Side (Huntsville) as more populated than the East Side, so consequently there's a lot more to do, and a lot more places to go/eat, etc. The East Side, where Whitney is, ah, 'sparsely populated'.

If you want to camp in the park there are hundreds upon hundreds of sites. They cater to all kinds of campers such as tents, trailers, mobile homes and stuff. If you have a canoe and just want to get 'outside' of the main area, but close enough to be back in no time at all, start at Smoke Lake and canoe south. A two hour paddle and a 300 metre portage will put you on Ragged Lake, with well established campsites. Canoe rentals will cost you $36 (or so) per 24 hour day, plus the campsite on a per person cost.

If you'd rather be 'close' rather than in the park itself, google for the recreation area called "Muskoka". It's a highly popular vacation area and there are all kinds of accommodations there. It's south-west (sort of) from the park.

If you'd rather be in the high life, Metropolitan Toronto (The Centre of the Earth) is a four hour drive away from Algonquin.

If you need more help or info, send me a pm.

Jim.

Hi

We stay in cottages in the summer at Parkways Cottages and they are ok cottages but they ahve a new one that is really nice but of course priceier than the others. It only has a few cottages (9 I think) and you have a private beach, free canoes/kyaks, dock, and paddle boats. The good thing about it is 6 minutes from Algonquin Park!
