My husband and I have 8 children and our next trip will be the first where they are all over the age of 3 (cue *shock whendidthathappen?!?!? feelings). That means that this trip will be our first where we can't all squeeze into a 2 bdrm. We are adding onto our points to allow us to start using the GV option, and because of a couple of unique-to-right-now circumstances (we have banked points and haven't gone for several years, the contract we are buying has banked and current unused points) for trip in January 2017 we will have 900 points we can use to either stay longer or stay some place that is a bit more expensive points-wise. This won't happen again that I can forsee and we will go back to our standard vacation length/time/routine.

We have owned at SSR since 2002, and that is where we stay. I am fully prepared to book there and be happy if nothing else is available or make sense.

Some of our specific needs & "wants"----

1.) hot tub access and site lines from the hot to the pool is very important--- traveling in January often means it is too cool to use the pool and they all end up in the hot tub frequently to warm up.

2.) Our youngest is non-mobile and is in a wheelchair. She is young enough that she doesn't need ADA specific bathroom features, but it does need to have elevator access to the main level of the GV and we need fairly easy access to/from where we park our van and wherever the main areas of the resort activities are. How space is laid out inside the villa/total amount of space also helps.

3.) Activities at the resort itself--- we are very slow go-ers and build in a lot of down time and down days.

4.) Transportation is not super important. It could be really nice bonus, but we come to Disney with our accessible van and use it liberally rather than try and hassle with wheelchair+5 million SSR bus-stops. We haven't really stayed anywhere with any type of real theme to it, which I think might be a ton of fun for the kids.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what might be fun to try, given our needs? I was thinking the theming at AKL could be fun for the kids? How overall wheelchair friendly is it/how are the hot tubs and pools? I have literally never laid eyes on it except for pictures.

BLT is in a fantastic location--- the walk to MK is awesome but from being in there it seems small and not particularly "themed" and the pool/hot tub nothing particularly great for the enormous point differential compared to SSR. It seems that what you are paying for here is location, am I correct? Is that the same with Grand Floridian? What would make it worth only being able to stay half as long for those price points?

I have never seen OKW in person either, but it seems similar to SSR but with larger GVs at a lower point cost. What are the pools/hot tubs like in comparison to SSR? How realistic is it to think we could get a GV at OKW in January/February?

The only other place with GVs is BWV, correct? How is the theming/pools there and how is the parking situation?

Sorry if this seems like a very unfocused post. We are laid back, slow-paced, and pretty easy to pleas so I'm really just trying to explore our options at other resorts and what might add some extra fun and excitement for the kids.

Thanks so much!

AKV has grand villas. Not sure the pool situation lines up with your hopes. Parking there is quite good, however.

We have stayed at SSR H/C GV and Jambo House H/C GV. I know you said at the moment H/C not needed. My adult son has a large tilt in space wheelchair and both SSR and Jambo were perfect. Liked Jambo better because it is one story and had the pool table. Jambo H/C isn't very Savannah friendly but if I recall it does have a view of the hot tub. The outdoor balcony at Jambo was the length of the grand villa and you could see animals if u strained your neck a little to the left... Loved having all the indoor access to dining and shopping. The master bath is amazing. Laying in the jacuzzi tub and watching TV and relaxing is pure bliss. Parking is easy at Jambo or free with H/C plate or placard. 4 total full size bathrooms. I personally did not care for the 2 story set up at SSR. If in a wheelchair it would be necessary to exit first floor to hallway and take elevator up one floor to entry 2nd floor. GV are not next to the elevator. Very tiny balcony at SSR. My Son could not go onto the balcony. SSR is a great location to Disney Springs which we frequent a lot. Of the 2 I prefer Jambo hands down. I have been buying small BWV contracts so it is my preference to someday and for every visit to stay at BWV H/C GV. We all just prefer the Boardwalk area. Our group currently consists of all adults with a few kids. Next visits kids will be 12 & 13(nieces daughters and sons caregivers children) and they always choose BWV or BLT. We won't ever do BLT GV because they don't offer one with a roll in shower. Now if they did BLT would also be a contender because we love being on the monorail. BWV GV will not offer a view of the pool or spa only the Boardwalk. Jambo has the zero entry pool BWV does not. I believe they both have lifts for the spa. Not sure on that as Dson can't utilize the spa or pool. Others will be able to answer that question. If you have older children I think they would enjoy the Boardwalk area but just speaking about the room you can't go wrong with Jambo

We own okw and only 1 time had an issue getting the Ada grand villa in January and that issue came up after we booked it
Never an issue with just a regular grand villa
The smaller pool by the Ada unit (there is only 1 Ada grand villa at okw) is plain and a good view from tub to pool
The main pool Not so much of a view of the pool from the tub

We have not stayed at the grand villa at OKW, but I can tell you that the main pool there isn't great for site lines, but the pool near building 55 is great for that. We have always had that entire pool all to ourselves. I don't know if it's heated in winter, but If it is, it would be a great place for you guys. It doesn't have a zero entry but assuming that if your 3 year old can go into the water that you can probably carry him in easily so that might be okay.

The GV in Jambo House are all on one level. All on the fifth floor, but at the ends of the wings.

BWV only has seven GV so they get booked up quickly.

Most of the GV at OKW start on the second floor; there are a few HCA GV though.

Am I correct in understanding that OKW doesn't have elevators, just stairs?

It sounds like the GVs at Animal Kingdom will provide our youngest with the best accessibility--- do you have specifically request Jambo house?

For those that have stayed at AKL and SSR or OKW--- how does the resort experience compare between them?

This has been very helpful....thank you!

There are 3 buildings (62, 63 & 64) at OKW that have elevators.

When you book at AKV, you book a specific building (Jambo House or Kidani Village). There are 2 categories that only exist in Jambo House (Values & Concierge Level).

Of the elevator buildings at OKW, only Bldg 63 at OKW has a GV. There is an elevator in that building, but it will only take you to the entrance of the villa, not to the top floor of the villa. There is one bedroom (the master) on the main floor and the other two are on the upper floor. Nice big bathroom in the master, plus another smaller bathroom with a shower on that same floor. Lots of room in the GV.

The GV at Jambo House are all on one floor, the fifth floor. Plus they have a pool table in the villa. If you want that single floor GV, you need to book Jambo House.

AKV is nice because of the savannas and they offer different activities than the other resorts do. SSR and OKW are both spread out with nice Community Halls for activities. All three offer campfires at night with marshmallows and movies.

With a handicap tag, you can valet park for free at AKV. The parking lot is further from the building.

I'm not sure about ADA specific GV's, but we stayed in a GV at SSR. Like others said, you took the elevator up to the 2nd floor, walked to the entrance of the villa, and then there were stairs inside it. Technically, you could leave the villa, walk back to the elevator and take it up to the 3rd floor which would be the upstairs of the villa, but not very convenient. If I were you, I'd look into places where the GV's are on one floor.

AKL is beautiful. Theming is gorgeous and the animals are a fun perk over other resorts. We enjoyed the pools, but they aren't the best in all of WDW or anything. I like that everything is in one building and there's not a lot of walking involved. At Kidani, the parking is under the building and you can just take the elevator down, which is nice. The major downside is that it's a long ride to the parks. Much longer than the other two resorts you are considering.

If I'm lounging around the resort a lot, I like SSR. I like both of the main pools and the fact that there are two to change things up. I like the playgrounds and the view of Disney Springs and all the outdoor space. Downside is that it's massive and spread all over and you could need a bus to get to the pool depending on where your room is.

OKW is very similar to SSR, but... less. One main pool and it's not as nice as SSR. I prefer the resort feel at SSR. I have not stayed in a GV at OKW, so I'm not familiar with that layout, but OKW's rooms are generally much larger than the other resorts.
