We would like to spend the first couple of nights of our Orlando trip at a beach. We have been to Disney seven times and have NEVER gone near a beach!!

Which side do you go to?

Which hotel (s) would you recommend? Would love to be on the beach but don't want to get too expensive. Savin' my money hopefully later for the Dolphin. :rolleyes1

My mom just took a quick trip down to Florida and checked out Siesta Key. It is about a 90 minute drive from Orlando and is on the gulf side. She said it was a stunning, beautiful beach. She didn't stay there so I can't help you with that. My friend, who lives in Orlando, goes there in the "off season" which is summer and gets better rates.

Cocoa is the "closest" beach as they advertise.

All depends on your preference--we have surfers on the Atlantic Side and some waves (and accompanying rip currents at times). The gulf side, I believe, is more calm than the ocean side.

I would actually recommend the gulf side as the beaches do tend to be more beautiful (as Christine) described.

Jetty park in Cocoa is a nice location for ocean side---very wide sandy shore..and if you hit it the right day you can wave to the ships as they leave port. Not for everyone--but I get a kick out of it.

As far as hotels--I'm not familiar with specifically what to recommend. There is a Hilton, Holidy Inn, Radisson at the Port, Ron Jon's, etc. A few of the hotels were closed and renovated/repaired following the hurricanes of 2004. The Hilton and HI definitely were part of that. So those would be nice as their would be a feeling of "new".

Good luck in your decision.

Any beach is good when you can go and swim in it in winter ;).

Gulf side!

Siesta is nice, I'm kinda partial to St. Pete Beach. Several hotels over there that are nice from little mom and pops (Keystone, Plaza Beach) to luxurious (Don Cesar).

We've stayed at Keystone once and Plaza Beach's sister hotel (Bayview) several times. Had some nice days going in the gulf, then rinsing off and going in the pool.

Whatever you decide, enjoy and don't forget the sunscreen!

We stayed in Cocoa Beach after our Disney trip this past summer and it rained non-stop for the first 3 days we were there. It was nice having Kennedy Space Center nearby for something to do other then hang out in the hotel. We got one nice day on the beach. The hotels were pretty reasonable, too. The beach it self wasn't anything great but it was clean and easy to access. We have also been to Marco Island and Naples and if your kids like sea shells, these are GREAT beaches for that.

For Sandy Beaches the Gulf side.

For big waves and course sand - Atlantic side.

There are so many beautiful beaches. St. Pete, Treasure Island, Indian Rocks, Marco, Siesta Key to name a few. It just depends on how far you want to go once you get here.

There is also, Englewood Beach , Longboat Key ,Sanibel and Captiva and Fort Myers Beach all on the Gulf side and the most being about 3 hours if that away from Disney .

Gulf side definitely we love Clearwater Beach west of Tampa-about 90 minutes depending on traffic. I go there every year-as a matter of fact getting ready to go next week.

I am partial to Siesta Key, its right near us. Absolutely amazing white sand like powder. I say Gulf side! Oh, and Siesta Key is about two hours from Disney. That's what it was when we drove it this weekend anyway. :)

My mom said the same thing about the sand. She said it was like nothing she had every seen--she couldn't even explain it. So fine, so white, so powdery. Then she walk down to the water and immediately found a sand dollar.

That is very exciting for us. We never see such things on the Maryland beaches.

Siesta Key has won awards for its sand!!

Gulf beaches are much nicer than the Atlantic IMO.....
right around here you have
Siesta
Crescent
Turtle
Longboat Key
Anna Maria

lots to choose from and all beautiful!

I have to ask: Does the Tag Fairy actually have a misspelled word in your tag? :confused3

I thought it was "tomatoes" versus "tomatos".

Shame on the Tag Fairy.

Been to both sides. I would much rather be on the Gulf side than ocean side. We really enjoyed the St. Pete area. The whole strip of Madiera Beach, Redington Beach, St. Pete Beach area is beautiful!!!

The Travel Channel had the top ten Florida beaches on last night. I think Siesta Key was number 2. I really want to see it some day. Most on the Orlando Board recommend the Gulf, but it's about an extra hour. Here's some info I gave to someone on the Univ board awhile back for St Augustine and Daytona. Daytona Beach was number 10 on the show. Hope it helps.

St Augustine

Besides the guided city tours, haunted tours and the "oldest" school, house, jail...everything tours, LOL, and the great shopping in the quaint stores along the cobble stone streets, we've done

The Alligator Farm which is fun. We liked Gator Land in Orlando a little more.

We've done this chocolate factory tour. It's free and only takes about 45 minutes.

Loved this winery. They had some wonderful homemade grape juice for the kids too.

We haven't taken the lighthouse tour yet, but it looks like one of the most picturesque ones.

Marine Land is now closed, and that's a good thing. Hopefully they will refurbish it. It has a lot of neat history, but it was not worth the money.

This cruise was a blast. We saw some dolphins and the captain let ds steer the boat for quite awhile.

There are tons of neat little restaurants in town, but one of our favorites is Harry's, it's a lot like Pat O'Brian's. We like to sit in the courtyard.

Creekside Dinery has great seafood and a nice outside deck with a fire pit. Owned by the same people as Salt Water Cowboys, but this place seems a little less touristy.

The Oasis is a casual place, good for breakfast

The Sunset Grill is pretty good

My favorite is The Beachcomer, which doesn't have a website, but it's an itty bitty barefoot picnic table type of place right on the beach, and it's a fun place to get some oysters or peel and eat shrimp.

My in-laws just moved from there and we used to stay with them, so I can't really recommend a hotel. There are some great looking B&B's in the heart of the city, but if you wanted to stay on the beach, I'd recommend a condo. It seems like most of the hotels are across the street from the beach. We did stay at Anastasia condos once and they were nice.

Daytona Beach

We've only been during off season. I don't think I'd want to go during speedweek or springbreak, especially with kids.

For hotels, I'd ONLY recommend the Hilton
http://www.daytonahilton.com/contactus.htm

and the Ocean Walk Resort, which has 2 indoor pools and the outdoor pool has a lazy river, a slide and a great kiddie pool with it's own slides and tunnels, etc. (We should be checking in tomorrow at this time, can't wait!)
http://www.oceanwalk.com/

which has the Ocean Walk village connected to it with restaurants and a movie theater. It's so nice to have everything within walking distance.

The speedway is fun. It has been awhile, but we loved taking the tour where you get to go on the track and walk on the bank
http://www.daytonaintlspeedway.com/

We're going to go to the Marine Science Center nice and small, easy with little ones. The casual guided tour was great, only about $5 to get in, really worth it.

A Chocolate Factory tour we haven't tried yet.

The lighthouse at Ponce Inlet is neat
http://www.ponceinlet.org/

and there is a nice restaurant there called Down the Hatch where you can watch sailboats and the most beautiful sun sets and another called The Inlet Harbor
http://www.inletharbor.com/

We love to just walk around the board walk, eat taffy, ride the go-carts, play in the arcades and sit on the pier at the outdoor restaurant. It has that tacky old carnival feel to it, but it's fun. There's music on the weekends at the BandShell next to the pier, but we've always missed it.

There is a new water park that just opened that we haven't been to yet
http://daytonalagoon.com/

There's also a dog track there. When we go with extended family, the guys like to get together and go. It's a little seedy, LOL.

Our favorite restaurant is the Ocean Deck. It has a great view of the ocean.
http://www.oceandeck.com/

The Oyster Pub is a sports bar, great for snacks, and if you're looking for somewhere to watch your "can't miss" football game. (They have a room and big screen just for Steelers fans, it's a blast!) The website is under construction
http://www.oysterpub.com/

For breakfast Steve's Famous Diner is good, and
http://www.billys-tap.com/ is awesome! A little pricey, about $100 for the 3 of us, but worth it.
http://www.auntcatfish.com/ is a casual kid friendly place with really yummy country style comfort food.

Whew! Like I mentioned, we just tack on a day or two. Dh isn't a big theme park person, and I just can't see going to Florida without having some seafood and feeling the sand between my toes.
Have fun planning!

Yep, I'm afraid she/he does.....but I never wanted to point it out. I was just happy to get the tag! :goodvibes

Thanks for the beach tips everyone. Now I'm debating about a 2-hr drive to the Gulf vs an hour to Cocoa Beach. :moped:

Snoopymom....thanks for all those links! Now that my net is up and running again, I might be able to go through them all in one evening!!! :teeth:

I have to agree, if you're going to Daytona, you absolutely MUST eat at Ocean Deck!!!! DH started going there before we met and he insisted we go for the food and the reggae on our honeymoon, now we bring the kids. Chili in the breadbowl is his recommendation, but their seafood and jerk chicken is awesome.

(I have to laugh-they've got one of those yellow 'Kennywood' arrows out front!)
