Need a doctors opinion please!

A friend at work needs some info. Her MIL went in for hip surgery, she broke her hip. She had the surgery 2 days ago and today they told her that she needed a blood transfusion. She was just wondering if this sounds normal, what would cause the need for a transfusion. Any info would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks from my co worker Laurie.

NOT unexpected. One can have significant blood loss with hip surgery. Fortunately, the blood supply today is extremely safe . Let's hope that she has an uneventful recovery ....

I'm not a doctor, or any medical professional for that matter, but four days after my spinal surgery for scoliois I had to have a blood transfusion because I'd developed anemia .. perhaps that could be it??

Yes, I agree with above folks. It is pretty common for a person to need a transfusion following this type of surgery. She will feel better after getting the transfusion most likely.
