Mods, I know this is probably a question for another board, but as a long-time poster in this particular forum, these are the people I trust, so I hope you'll leave it here for a bit.

So I've never booked a last-minute trip to WDW....always at least several months out. Looking to go the first full week of January (2nd through 8th). Yesterday, no availability for any resorts. Today, availability for a couple of resorts.

So my question is...is there a 30-day mark by which reservations have to be cancelled without penalty? Is that why there's suddenly a small bit of availability? And should I let that get my hopes up that over the next week or so, more rooms will become available?

Thanks DIS fam....

So, I just did a check of reservations for January 2. Caveat: I could not book any one place for the full week so I shortened the dates to January 2 to 5 and found plenty of rooms. I checked Coronado Springs tower water view and saw it said: "Check Out—and modify or cancel without penalty by December 28, 2021." That's consistent with the historic 5 day cancellation policy for resort only reservations.

I added tickets and the cancellation information changed to "Check Out—and modify or cancel without penalty by December 03, 2021." So, 30 days for packages.

Unless you just don't want to move resorts, you might try different dates within Jan 2 to 8 at different resorts to see if you get reservations solidified even if for two different resorts.

Once you have booked, consider transferring the reservation to Dreams. When i was going to WDW, I would book my room and then transfer it to Dreams so they get the commission.

Doing a last-minute visit to Disney has probably never been more challenging. Along with getting a resort, you should probably check on park availability, and you'll likely need to be flexible for any dining you might normally do - a lot of the ADRs for early Jan will already be gone. It's just so dang tough to do a trip like this anymore - hope it works out! Good luck!

Agree with this too and it isn't just a WDW trip. We've done, or tried to do, two "last minute" trips to places other than WDW. One we pulled off with some last, last minute major changes to our anticipated itinerary; the other we just cancelled because (1) DW failed to pull off a Mary Poppins stairway descent and (2) the cost/hassle of scheduling COVID-19 testing and finding a suitable and affordable hotel room was making the trip a lot less than fun.

Ooof. Just discovered that.

Well, that might change things. I've been there during a race weekend when I was running. Guessing that might result in some less-than-desirable crowds.
