Necessity of Express Pass first week in January

Hi Everyone. We have never been to Universal and we are going the first week in January. There are 5 of us and I wondered about crowds etc...and how long lines for rides would be. I was hoping you may be able to tell me if they are necessary. We are deciding whether to book Cabana Bay (no express pass) or Royal Pacific (that comes with Express passes) Our concern is the lack of room in Royal Pacific. Our kids are older.
Any advice is appreciated.

Two years ago I went the first week of January
Stayed onsite and had free unlimited ep

Crowds did start to grow around the 7th

Large SA groups were present during my stay

Weekends had more crowds than week days

I thought all was doable for those without the ep

Think you will be fine
