Necessary, Luxury, or Useless

I can tell you this we spent a lot of money on thing I thought I needed and never used. So use your new TT and buy thing as you need them.

While were on the subject of sheets and bedding. Has anyone tried the Travasaks? Does anyone have a recommendation for a foam mattress pad? We used out TT for the first time this last weekend and those beds are not the most comfortable I've ever slept on. They are heated which is nice, but WAAAY to firm. I want to get a foam pad and then try the travasak so I don't wake up tangled in the sheets. They are a little pricey though so I thought I'd ask you guys what you thought.

I think there's way too much emphasis on sheets. I spent many nights sleeping in holes I dug or under mosquito netting in some south american jungle during the rainy season. Anything is better than that.

I agree, too much emphasis on sheets,,,in my later teenage years I too spent many a nights in a dug out hole,,,,,no,wait a minute,,those were drunk'n stooppers and I was just passed out in the yard. Never mind.

Ive been there...Ive done that...and it wsnt just in my teens!!!

I think my sheets are like .....12 count. Oh, who am I kidding, I dont even use sheets on the air matresses, Im lucky if I even get to cover up with my comforter stealing wife!!!

I figure if I'm not cold and wet, life is good. If there's tile on the bathroom floor - that's luxury, man.

Yes, I agree with this. Do a bunch of short, close to home trips. Preferably close enough that you can run home to get things you forgot.

I haven't read all the thread, but some necessities from the husband's (that would be me) point of view:
Tool kit. I bought a pretty complete toolkit from Walmart that folds up neatly and relatively small, about the size of a fat laptop. The tools are cheap, but it has virtually everything and I have used it (and friends have borrowed tools from it) many times. Add duct tape, of course!

Plastic garbage bags. Both large (40+ gallon) and small plastic grocery bags. We use a small plastic grocery bag in the TT for garbage, then take it out to the large garbage bag that is by the tongue of the TT (close enough for people to throw stuff away, but far enough to be out of sight). At night the big garbage bag goes in the back of the truck (or to dumpster if full). Don't forget about the bag! Animals will tear it apart. Large garbage bags are also used to protect firewood from rain if needed.

Folding tables for outside, like TV tray tables. We had a great cloth folding table (like the chairs), but it was lost. Now we have two aluminum folding tables that work fine.

Luxuries: Large, folding "chaise" lounge chair. We bought ours from SportsmansGuide. Practically like a hammock, it is soooo comfortable.
Awning silly lights.... gotta have them! We have parrots and palm trees (think Jimmy Buffett).

Not really a luxury for me... 3 different coffee makers.
Electric Drip - for when we have electric hookup. Turn it on and go for a morning bike ride with the kids, come back to coffee.
Big non-electric Percolator -- for dry camping. 14 cup size. Have to stay at camper when percolating, to make sure it doesn't overflow and to take it off the burner when done. Makes a LOT of good, hot coffee though.
French Press -- Just discovered how good, and easy, these are last year. When you don't need a lot of coffee. Only makes about 4 coffee mugs worth, but relatively quick and REALLY good, even using cheap coffee. I use it in the evening many times.

Again, go camping locally a few times before you just start buying stuff.

If you want a really great cup of coffee, take that French Press pot with some fresh ground Kona beans and make it with distilled water. You will never want another cup of any other coffee again.

I've had bad luck with Kona beans. On our honeymoon, wife and I were in Hawaii and had Kona coffee at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Just about the Worst cup of coffee I've ever had!! Afterwards, I realized that the coffee pot had probably not been cleaned or something, but it was terrible.

I should try Kona coffee again one of these days.

I get them from a local coffee monger. My wife says I am a coffee snob since I seldom will drink anything else.

We ladies need our beauty rest on high thread count sheets. That way we feel good and are less likely to call men names and have mood swings. You men can sleep in hole and come out looking rugged and handsome and only makes you more appealing.
