Near Disaster! HM closed for refurb

This thread took a funny turn. I like the overlay, but I get to see the regular HM lots of times every year, so I am ready for the change.
I really think it depends on where you're coming from. :)

This is a discussion board, so let's keep it at a discussion level and not an argument level :)

No arguments, just opinions. ;) She stated hers and I stated mine. We are all adults and can respect one anothers opinions im sure. :cutie:

Just had to share my little "heart attack" moment.

Our trip to DLR is less than 6 weeks away. Working on our schedule today, I went to the DL web site to check scheduled open, close, etc. I had last checked just a couple of weeks ago.

Imagine my dismay when I saw that the Haunted Mansion will be closed for refurbishment while we are there!!! ACK! That's probably #1 on our list of things to do!!!

BUT -- joy! Closer review of the schedule revealed that it is OPEN our very first day there and closed the rest.

We hadn't decided whether we were going to the parks on our first day...but this just sealed the deal!

We're regular out-of-season visitors in WDW, and we know that by going out of season we risk missing some of our favorites. I'm just so relieved that this one worked out! :)

you get to see it on your first day there (original format), and i get to see it when it opens on the last day of my trip (xmas format). i feel kind of bummed that i only get one day of hm, but it's better than none i guess.:sad1:

I was sorta disappointed that it will be HM when we're going. I've never seen it tho so I can't judge it. Just will miss the reg HM. HOWEVER, we saw some of the ride throughs on youtube and DS was scared by regular HM and not at all of the holiday overlay.

So it's probably beneficial. DH is STOKED. He's a NBC dork

I wonder how many people actually like the nbc theme applied to the HM? I know that I hate it!

I'm pretty indifferent to the NBC overlay. It's OK but then again, I'm from a much older generation so NBC doesn't mean anything to me. But my kids, they LOVE it. (and no they're not goths) It seems to be less threatening to younger children than the traditional HM.

That said, my own Halloween decor does tend to lean heavily toward NBC so maybe I like it more than I think.

:confused3

I think a lot of kids who would be scared of the regular Haunted mansion. This includes my little sister but she loves the NBC overlay because it's "silly"

We chose out dates last year to arrive the day before HM went down for the NBC overlay. Since we always go to DL in the fall we had never gotten to see HM in it's original version. We all thought the NBC theme kinda weird and figured we would like it "plain". However, after all is said and done, I have decided I prefer the NBC version. My DD loves the music and without the added decorations it just seemed sorta lackluster, IMHO. Still glad we saw it once in the original version so we would know what we had/or had not been missing.

We love both versions. I'm amazed at how extensive the changes are. I have to agree with the comments about frightening level for kids too. My son refused to go on the original version last year, but LOVED to NBC version. The kids watched the movie to get ready for the ride and it really helped. Now DS is determined to ride the regular version next time we go.

That's funny, That's exactly how my son has come to love the HM. When he was about 3 we got stuck in the graveyard with one of the popping heads right in front of us. DS was horrified! He locked his eyes upward and refused to look anywhere else. Afterward, wild horses couldn't get him on HM again. But when he turned 5 and watched NBC he suddenly wanted to go on the DL version of the movie. After a year or so he decided that he would like to try the HM. First time he was scared but afterward he couldn't wait to go on it again.

When do they usually take the decorations down? I'm going in February so I hope it's open!

.... I still believe, that if nbc overlay is so popular, then why not just create a ride for it? seriously, (again, not in NOS, it just does not belong there!)

I agree.

Now heres mine: Im a little thrown back by people who claim to "hate" the overlay and despise it alltogether being that its only temporary.

For the handful of people that loathe the overlay...there are many more that love it, and love the change-up for that matter. Brings a sense of change to the norm allbeit temporary.

My advice? Don't go there at that time. Plain and simple. ;)

Mid/late September through early January. That's how long the normal HM isn't open. 1/3 of the year. That's a LONG time.

They had it down and back open by middish January this year. I was SO glad, b/c I hadn't seen it as normal HM since I was a child. Went in '05 while the overlay was being put up, went in '06 during the overlay but DS freaked out with the grown adults shrieking in the stretching room and coudln't go on, and then we went in sept '07 but I think I didn't even go that time. Went again in December, I think I went that time and just hated it (I don't like Tim Burton much, and really don't like the images I've seen from the movie and have avoided watching it b/c of that). I was SO glad to finally see the normal HM in January on my solo trip. :goodvibes
