I am driving down to WDW from NE PA!

Normally I take I95 (from philly) straight down to FL. However, I heard the "back way" is better. You avoid the Philadelphia construction, Baltimore, DC area.

The problem is that there are 2 different "back ways"!!! I would like to hear from people who have done both!

Plan A
I81 - I64- I95 (RICHMOND VA)

PLAN B
I81 - I77 - I26 - I95 (CHARLESTON SC) (on the map this way seems way out of the way)

It looks way out of the way, but it isn't. The difference in mileage is negligible, but if you go 81-77-26-95, you will experience VERY little traffic and NO slowdowns.

After driving from NC to Massachusetts MANY times using both routes, I have found taking 81 is faster EVERY time.

Thanks!

ps I agree with You on the Wilma Flintstone thing! :cool1:

Any route the gets you out of driving the Baltimore/Washington D.C. beltway seems worth it! We are starting in York PA and although heading down 83 to 95 seems more direct, we're heading over to 81 and will enjoy the ride much more! For one, you don't have to stare at the trees that seem as high as the sky! We went to Charlotte, N.C. a few years back and going the 81/77/etc ride is much more scenic. We will stop in Charlotte as a "halfway" point to visit our friends for the evening. We are really anxious to get to Fla, but sometimes you just have to stop to visit folks that ya love :goodvibes

We have done both 95 corridor and 81-77-26-95 and strongly prefer the back way. Some people will drop down to 95 from 81 on 66 and 17, but we have been in gridlock traffic all the way to Richmond, so don't like that route when heading south. Did it once on return north.

Last year we drove from Maine and did 84-81-66-17-95. Big mistake. Once we got back on 95 at Fredricksburg, Va, we hit heavy traffic all the way to the NC border where we stopped for the night. This year we plan on going 84-81-77-26-95. A lot of "Snowbirds" from New England swear by this route except from late November to end of March because of snow. :earsboy: :earsgirl:

We are from S. Jersey.....any suggestions on that? We were planning on I-95 all the way down but now questioning it.

HI Andy,
When are you going to the world? I'm starting to rethink our whole 95 straight through thing too!

2 weeks from today!!!!!!! I wish life had a FASTPASS! :cool1:

Does anyone know the speed limits on the 81-77-26-95 route? We usually take 95 all the way down from Philadelphia and would love to avoid the entire DC area. I believe the speed limit increases to 75 once you pass Virginia and am hoping the speed limit is the same on this back route. We're leaving in 11 days!

I believe the speed limits are the same on this "back route". That's the way we went this past July. I do have to say, doing the speed limit makes you feel like you're going awfully slow at times when the traffic is speeding past you! ::yes::

I just did this trip last week. It was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!
The speed limits change from 65 to 70. There is NO construction untill you hit 95. Thats in GA & FL...however the construction did not hinder the traffic in anyway.

Also, I have to say, I did not see one state trooper on 81,77 or 26...either coming or going. it took me 18 hrs going & 18 hours coming back from NE PA.

Have a great time! :earsboy:
