NCL Breakaway in Major Winter Storm

I thought the thrill seekers paid extra for that type of experience. Just kidding. On a serious note it just shows you that any cruise line can get caught in bad weather.

We got caught in a storm from NYC to San Juan PR on Holland America. It wasn't quite as bad as what this sounded like (while the pools emptied due to the rocking motion, the water didn't infiltrate the inside areas of the ship), but when you "cross the Atlantic" (draw a line between NYC and PR, or from Hatteras and The Bahamas, and you'll see you're well off the continental shelf) stuff like this can happen.

No, you're right. There have people on this board that talked about how much fun a trip like this would be. I thought they were nuts. This would be hell!

Seas like that might be interesting for a couple hours, certainly not 2 days straight. And, well, once water starts pouring in to the ship:

I have never understood the appeal of cruising out if NYC in winter. Even in good weather it will be cold for a good chunk of the trip. I never even considered how awful it would be in a storm.

At least everyone is alive, I guess.

I doubt they'll get a full refund.

Do airlines refund passengers when they encounter rough turbulences during a flight?

Did they say how long the rough conditions lasted?

I wonder how the ship is going to recover from the water inside...?

We cruised out NYC in November and it was a cold 25 degrees. I can't imagine how cold the sea days are now.

They may give a discount on a future cruise or something that. It's not required. It's more of good will type thing to keep customers. I think it's a little easier for airplanes to avoid turbulence or at least get out of it quickly.

Back in hurricane season most of the cruise lines affected wouldn't give full refunds, not even if the cruise left several days after it was originally scheduled. As long as the cruise embarked, passengers were expected to be there and enjoy their vacation, compensated by little more than a prorated refund.

I'm wondering if they were able to repair all the damages in time for the cruise leaving today. That's a lot of water to pump out, glass to sweep up and replace, shower doors to replace....

When my DH was aboard a military ship and had seas like that he was not happy either...and he was a Marine. The Capt should have stayed south until the storm was further out. Bad call! I think there should be compensation to those inbound and outbound if there was damage.

Cruising out of NYC in winter is usually good. Of course it’s not usually this cold. Sailed out of Bayonne New Jersey in January 09 on rccl. Weather was good.

What do you mean he was a Marine? Once a Marine always a Marine. SEMPER FI

I live in NYC and don't think I'd ever cruise from here in Winter. The first two days and the last two will be too cold to enjoy being outside. I'd much rather fly down to Florida and leave from there. We've done that the last two years for President's week (DCL Magic in 2016 and NCL Getaway in 2017) and I'm kicking myself for not doing it this year. After all this cold, we could really use a cruise to the Caribbean.

That's what I was thinking, and watching this video I can see why the passengers were thinking the same thing. It's not like NCL didn't know it was going to be stormy.
