Hey Guys !

I just wanted to start a separate thread for people who can talk about the specifics of what they love about the overlay instead of voicing opinions about liking/disliking the overlay in general.

My fiancee bought me the Collector's Edition of NBC and I watched most of the special features (including all of the NBC Overlay Extras). This past January was the VERY FIRST time I had seen it. Being a BIG Tim Burton fan, I was in awe. My heart skipped a beat and I thought I could OD in happiness :goodvibes

What I found quite amazing was that the gingerbread house on the dining table in the ballroom is REAL. The pastry chefs at DLR work with designers and come up with an amazing gingerbread house that is reminiscent of a specific aspect of the movie.

Also, when they were first getting everything ready, they had called up a local company that specializes in wrapping paper to come up with the wrapping for all the presents in the attic. Being a graphic designer, I completely appreciated the paper. I am a little bit obsessed with stationary and it was so cool to pay attention for the detail on the packages. At first they look like these bright and colorful presents, but if you take a close look there are eery spiders and spiky vines intertwined.

I am just TOOO stoked about going to DLR in two weeks for MTOTP :woohoo:

I looove Halloween :)

haha i agree with gisele, but i guess it works for both:)
i really like the jack in a santa outfit robot-thing in haunted mansion...he creeps me out b/c it looks like he can be real! hahahaha and the pictures in the spooky hall...i like normal HM, but im positive isaiah will like the NBC waaaaay better!! haha so im excited to see how he likes it:goodvibes
you really didnt see NBC overlay before last year??? whaaaat!! sis i thought you wouldve seen that right when they started it! lol
and i really wanna watch NBC now:( haha

woooo DL in less than week!!!:woohoo:
im excited for MTOTP too!!! ahhhhh! im too obsessed with halloween..i already decorated my apartment a couple weeks ago lol i couldnt wait!!

Last year we went to see HM on Labor Day specifically so we could see it with it's original theme because we are not fans of NBC and we were pretty sure we would like it better. We always travel in the fall and have never seen the original. I am now a NBC fan. Original was okay but we were pleasantly surprised to find that we really like the "busy-ness" of the NBC overlay even better. Honestly, the original was kinda.... well, um.... bland. My DD-8 loves the NBC music and I agree that it adds an extra bit of fun to the attraction.

I'm looking forward to seeing the overlay for the first time on Jan.2. I will be very disappointed if they close it early for some reason. Of course I like the original HM, but I like the idea of seasonal changes on the rides. It makes gives us something new and different to look at. It also makes you want to come back at different times during the year.

Ummm, isn't this a thread for those of us who like NBC Haunted Mansion? I think there is another thread for those of you who don't -- that is one of the great things about Disney, there is something for everyone.

OP, one of my favorite things about NBC is the music in the stretching gallery -- I love the Grim, Grinning Ghosts instrumental that is so loud!

Actually I am getting to like the NBC overlay better than the old HM but that is JMHO.

I love NBC and can't wait to see the overlay again in 2 days. :woohoo: I am a big fan of the original HM, but I have to say that I almost like the NBC just as well. My kids definitely prefer the NBC (but do like the original too).

I love NBC...Jack and Sally fan...and I LOVE the NBC overlay on the Haunted Mansion...(HM is may second favorite ride at DL, this ride had just opened, 1969, and it was my first trip to DL, I have gotten to enjoy this ride for a very long time!)

I will be going back to DL this December just to see the HM and IASMW dressed up for the holidays...and wazowskiLOVER :cutie: , I am going to pay attention to the gift wrap :thumbsup2 ...JC

There is another currently active HMH thread going on where non-HMH lovers voice their opinions. I think Wazowskilover started this one for the fans or hopeful fans of the overlay. Oh well, it's all good - we are all family here!:goodvibes

In any case, I have said this on other threads. I like the NBC overlay not so much because I was a huge fan of NBC to begin with, but because it is something different to see for about 3-1/2 months. Because it is such an extensive overlay, every inch of HM is redone in this theme, so to me, it seems like we are getting a whole new ride for 3 months out of the year. To me, that is cool! We can see the original HM version 8 months out of the year. I am very detail-oriented, so I fully appreciate that Disney puts so much effort and attention to detail into every inch of the NBC theme of the ride, and I sort of feel that every time I ride it, there is something new to see - like, for example, last year, for the first time I noticed the 'snowdrift' Hidden Mickey on the floor of the banquet scene (which really looks like a white Mickey-shaped bath rug), and I am sure there are more to be found every year. I also love all the pumpkins on the outside of the HM facade. It is very colorful. That is the thing about the original HM - it is very dark and there is not much color. I guess it is supposed to be that way - it is supposed to be spooky. But I feel like the NBC overlay not only captures a different kind of spooky feel but also a lot of color. And it totally fits into both the Halloween AND Christmas seasons because the whole NBC story is about Jack badly wanting to get some Christmas magic into Halloweentown and be part of all the decorations and delivering presents and all that. It wouldn't make sense if it was only up for Halloween or only up for Christmas. It has to be up for the entire holiday season!

But I do love both the original HM and the NBC versions - I have two sculptures sitting on a glass table next to me right now: one is of the original HM house, with creepy tombstones and ghosts on the outside, and the other sculpture is of the NBC-HMH house, with Jack and Sally and other things from the ride on the outside. The two sculptures happily sit side by side on the table, and they coexist with my ToonTown houses and fountain. I made a whole little 'Disneyland neighborhood' on this table, and the NBC crew is part of it!

Sherry E, so very well said...
But I feel like the NBC overlay not only captures a different kind of spooky feel but also a lot of color.
This is part of what I love about the Holiday Mansion, that and Madame Leota's 13Days of Christmas...jc

I love seeing Jack right before the graveyard ! It is so great. Eric says that zero reminds him of my dog Scooter :goodvibes

Yay for going to DLR !!! I can't wait. Its true that this last January was the first time I had ever gone... ick. HAHA.

Original was okay but we were pleasantly surprised to find that we really like the "busy-ness" of the NBC overlay even better.

I think that is part of the excitement of it. It feels like you can find something new to pay attention to every time you're on the ride !! Its fantastic !

YESS. This is completely how I feel. Usually we would just go in June, but solely because of how great it was to see in January, we decided to go in October (it doesn't hurt that MTOTP is going on AND I love halloween extremely).

Haha !! Thanks for the backup :)

I agree about the music in the stretching gallery. It TOTALLY sets the mood for the whole ride. I love the first 'la la la la la.' It gets me COMPLETELY AMPED UP !!!

My fiancee actually likes the old HM, but I LOOOOOVE the NBC overlay, I think its better too.

YESS !! The gift wrap is so well done :) Also, on the naughty and nice list, the names are imagineers, 'Leota' is for Madam Leota and 'Timmy' is Tim Burton of course !!

I also love how the outside of the Mansion looks with its NBC decor!

I just read that Tim Burton is doing a version of Alice in Wonderland for Disney, starring Johnny Depp. If the Alice ride in DLR were not so short, we might get a nifty overlay of that too. I am sure he will make his Alice really wild and visually innovative, and I would love to see elements of it incorporated into DLR, but I think Disney will keep the ride as is, closer to their own animated version of Alice.

And hey - Johnny Depp is becoming Mr. Disney now! Who would have thought that such a messy-haired, non-conformist, free-thinking kind of guy would end up being in Disney movies? I bet he is making big bucks!

Yay !! Sherry :)

I agree with you on all of this. It IS something new to see other than the original HM. I feel like it is a special treat because normally with DLR rides, once you've been on it, thats it. For the NBC overlay, it becomes an added attraction to the park. I also didn't even notice the hidden mickey snow trail. I will definitely look out for it for sure :)

I agree about the color. In watching the movie (and the special features;)), they deliberately kept Halloweentown looking drab and staying to minimal specific colors. Once Jack went to Christmas Town, all of this color got introduced. I believe that they achieved that with the overlay. The whole ride is about Jack's excitement about Christmas and incorporating Halloween into it. The colors on the ride are fantastic. I completely geek out almost every time I'm on it !!

How cool that you have your own DL town !! I would LLOOOOVE to see that. I keep wanting to buy more and more DLR stuff, but on my paycheck, that is COMPLETELY impossible to do before the trip in 2 weeks.

OH, aren't you EXCITED ?!?! I know I am.

OH I knowww. I heard about that a couple of months ago. I am sooo stoked about the movie. I LOOOOVE Alice in Wonderland. I used to watch it all the time when I was little.

I agree about Johnny Depp. Its so funny how he is doing Disney movies. I read in an interview he did and he said that he is doing these movies because he wants his children to be able to see his work and enjoy it the way others do. Also he wanted them to be proud of him. I would be ! He awesome... and HOTTT.

Don't want to spoil anything for anyone who doesn't want to see, but if you all want pictures from last year's NBC HM, let me know and I'll post.

You're right. As magical and fun as DLR is - and we all wouldn't be here on DISboards if we didn't feel that way! - there is a sense with many of the rides that once you have been on them, that's it. You have seen them. Some rides we all do repeatedly (for me, it's Pirates), but there are some rides I cannot even get my friends to go on anymore. Like, for example, no one will ride Star Tours with me anymore. They have all bailed on it, even though they all used to ride it years ago! Also, last year, when a friend and I walked through Fantasyland, past all the "kids' rides," my friend scoffed and said she was not interested in standing in line for those rides anymore. She had been on them, that was enough. Now, for me, that is too bad because I like Peter Pan and I love Alice in Wonderland. I am not above riding any of the kids rides. That's right. I love Dumbo - I am 41 years old and I would ride Dumbo now - I am not afraid to admit it!!!:woohoo: So she was willing to compromise and go on the Teacups and Roger Rabbit, but she actually kind of looked disinterested when I headed for Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters! How could you not like the Buzz Lightyear ride? It's great! So I think people tend to get that 'been there, done that' kind of attitude over time, and so at least, with the NBC overlay of HM, it is something new and different to see for 3-1/2 months in a year, and it is even more transformed than the Small World Holiday ride, which is great, too!....I just sort of accidentally created a Disneyland neighborhood. Over the years, I collected pieces here and there - a ToonTown Mickey's House snowglobe here, a Teacups snowglobe there, a HM snowglobe and other little mini figures of the Doom Buggies and all the other Disney rides (the Theme Park Attraction Collection was GREAT for getting mini versions of all the rides at a cheap price, with characters riding on them!), and then I got two ToonTown house sculptures as a gift - Goofy's House and TT City Hall. There were others in that collection but I never got them. Then, I bought the ToonTown Fountain and the Haunted Mansion sculpture and kind of put them all together in one spot. Finally, I spotted the NBC version of the HM on eBay a long time ago - for a good price - and snapped it up. But there is no way I could buy or 'collect' anything NOW! In fact, I am hoping I don't have to SELL my 'Disneyland neighborhood' any time soon!....Yes, I am VERY excited about my trip next week (in 6 days - yay!:cool1: ) because I thought it wouldn't happen. You appreciate things so much more when they are fought for! But I won't believe it is happening until I actually GET there and set foot in the hotel! Even up until now, this very minute, it has been a roller coaster of sudden setbacks and disasters that almost made me cancel my plans a few times. Then, something good would happen to make it seem possible, and everything was okay, until something bad happened again to make me almost cancel. I THINK I am in the clear now and that it should all be okay for the next week, but things have been very unstable the last few months, and I am tearing my hair out over it!

OH I knowww. I heard about that a couple of months ago. I am sooo stoked about the movie. I LOOOOVE Alice in Wonderland. I used to watch it all the time when I was little....I agree about Johnny Depp. Its so funny how he is doing Disney movies. He is HOTTT. And come to think of it, it is funny that Tim Burton is part of the Disney family too!! He has to make movies for his kids, too! I think JD made the right choice by making the movies for his kids - and I am sure the money does not hurt! I think the NEW Burton-ized version of Alice will be very interesting to look at. The whole Alice story - even in its most primitive state - was always visually fascinating because of the hallucinogenic aspect of it, so in 2009 or whenever this new one comes out, it can only be that much MORE wondrous to the eye!

Speaking of which, Wazowskilover - I CAN'T WAIT to see your photos after your trip happens! I KNOW you will take some great ones! In fact, if I spot anything out of the ordinary or not easily discovered on my trip next week, I will let you know so you can get it on film!

I agree that some rides are just over and done with. I personally don't go on star tours anymore. I never really liked it in the first place, but a lot of my boy cousins (and my fiancee) love Star Wars, so sometimes I just go with the flow because no one wants a party pooper. In Fantasyland, I ride EVERYTHING. I think thats where most of the nostalgia is. I am with you, my two favorites are Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Those rides are so fun :) I can't believe though that your friends wouldn't go on Buzz ?!!? That is gotta be my favorite ride in Tomorrowland. I think I personally love it because I am a Pixar Addict.

I think that once I move into my own place with my fiancee, we are going to dedicate a study room or office for disney stuff. I know he wants to get a lot of the traditional old school sculptures of Walt's original design of Mickey. I can't wait for that !! I think that ebay is the way to go for this kind of stuff. Its so hard to pay full price because they pump up the prices so high. Sometimes though I find pretty good deals at the Disney Store when they are trying to get rid of old inventory to replace with newer stuff !!

I am soo excited to see Tim Burton's interpretation of Alice as well. I've always loved how Tim Burton uses camera angles, light source and character interpretation. Its going to be so fun to see. I can't wait until it comes out so we can have a discussion about it ;)

I'm glad everything worked out for you with the trip and all !! If you do see things for me to pay attention to, please let me know ! I actually have this photography project due on Monday 8/13 that has to represent dreams. There is no other place that can represent that better. I'm gonna have so much fun photographing everything !! I bought a tripod and have been playing with settings so that when I get there, I can get the most awesomest night time pictures !!

YAY for DL !!

DH and I are huge NBC fans...loved it on release! It has always been one of the movies we watch in our Christmas movie rotation. I would have to say that Jack is my DH's favorite animated character, period!

The first time we saw the overlay, we were in AWE!!! When we went to WDW for last years holiday trip, we were so disappointed to find out that they don't change their HM...it was so sad to ride that version and know that DL guest were getting the special treat of NBC fun!

I have to say though, that what pops out in my head, is the floating Zero where the candles usually are! I think it sticks in my head because when we first rode it, we were struck by how detailed it was, every single little nook and cranny had been considered and included in the design.

I love the original HM, and enjoy it during Spring trips, ect, but the holidays at Disney just wouldn't be as merry without NBC!!! :goodvibes

I agree !!! Awe is the only way to describe it. Its just completely amazing from the outside of the Mansion to the end of the adventure when you're leaving ! The floating Zero stays in my brain too, oh and the singing venus fly traps !

Goodness sake I love NBC :)
