NBA at Walt Disney World

A few questions that I didn't see answers to here (maybe there aren't answers yet):

Are the 3 resorts going to be NBA-only? Will regular resort guests be allowed in the other buildings at Coronado, Grand Floridian, etc?

I was under the impression that they could fit everyone at one resort so why break up everyone into 3 resorts? I noticed all three resorts are conference center ones so maybe they want to ensure there's enough space to handle everything the league needs to setup.

I would be so angry if I were you. I completely sympathize. If it's any consolation, this may be a hint that non-DVC resorts are going to remain closed for much longer than we are expecting. So, there is maybe a chance you would have been cancelled/moved anyway. I know that may not be much of a positive, but maybe it's a small relief.

Now, that said....if non-DVCs do open in the meantime, and GF/YC/GD remain closed....then Disney is going to have a lot of upheaval on their hands, and rightfully so.

The thing I am most miffed by is it just doesn't make sense to me to displace/cancel people who spent a LOT of money to stay at your flagship resort, specifically to have a certain location and a certain proximity to the Magic Kingdom.....to displace those people so that a group of other people, who don't NEED that specific location or proximity...it's just not good optics. Yes, the NBA players require a "certain level" of comfort. But, there are other places that they can stay.
We all have a place in the Disney pecking order...

They can, but it’s less overwhelming for both Disney and the NBA if they’re spread out throughout multiple resorts.
Whether or not the other buildings in those resort complexes are open hasn’t been answered, but I’d guess the answer won’t be in favor of those that have reservations at any of the 3, and seemingly CSR/GDT throughout with the other 2 only through a few weeks into August

Is this going to happen every year, July through October? Anyone know the approximate starting date in July? I'd like to avoid NBA season at WDW in the future.

At this length, it’ll probably never happen again, meaning they wont be there for 3 months. I guess I cant say never as if you asked me if this was a possibility 4 months ago, I’d say never. But their seasons are typically October through early June. This next season (after this one finishes) is rumored to start in December, but I don’t know how that would work with the Olympics and many of them participating. There have been talks over the last year or so that in December every year they’d hold a mini tournament but thats not confirmed, and possibly could depend on how this goes.

Long story short, this will likely be the only impact the NBA will have on Disney. Future year trips wont be impacted

I hope so. I am not a sports fan and am also not appreciative of how their presence seems to have diverted Disney's attention from working to please ordinary guests.

They simply can't please normal guests like they want to right now.

This is the start of the concept for their annual mid season tournament. Guarantee you the contract had an option for an annual deal with this in mind.

Will all of the teams make it to Round 1? I'm just trying to figure out when YC might be available to guests.

Not sure a contract would be signed for that before these teams even played a single game down there. I’m sure its definitely in the cards. The mid-season tournament stated Vegas as the possible location, but that was last December Before WWoS seemed like an option for such an event. I could see them rotating between Vegas and Disney, probably skip next years tournament as its probably going to be a tight squeeze season due to needing post-season rest, and the qualifiers/Olympics starting in July of 2021. I could see the Tournament occurring in the 2021-2022 season in Vegas and then Disney in 2023 if this one goes well

This is Disney trying to make lemonade out of the lemons we've all been given. There's no reason, short another or continued pandemic, that this will ever happen again. Disney wasn't going to have all of their resorts open anyway. They have different departments with lots of moving pieces. There are tons of events happening on site during every trip any of us has ever made there and we probably didn't know or weren't affected by 90+% of them.

Wow... I was way off in my hotel guesses several pages back. I’m really surprised that they are spreading that far across the whole property with these three hotels. I never thought they’d choose ones that are a mix of DVC and regular rooms, even thought the buildings are separate. The choice must have been heavily weighted around convention/extra spaces. Lots of unhappy people on the boards today!
