Nazi Jersey: Home of the Oppressed or just a bunch of lazy whiners

Had to rant, this just doesn't seem to go away.

A small sign in the front of our local Wawa's here in NJ have caused quite a ruckus recently. Wawa's btw are convenient stores like 7-11 but much better.

Anyway the sign says that if you leave your car running while you enter the store you are subject to a $3,000 fine. That's $3,000 not $300. My wife, who brought this to my attention, wanted to explain once again why we live in a Nazi state. Needless to say our entire 2hr trip down the shore was spent arguing this point.

My wife thinks it's awful that we have to abide by such a rule. I on the other hand think, what's the big deal. My POV is that turning off our cars would prevent us from having to walk through a wall of exhaust, cars would less likely to be stolen and there would be less opportunity for cars to accidently crash into store fronts. And the only thing the state is asking us to do is to turn a key.

My wife's argument is #1 why should I be forced to turn my car off and #2 what happens in the winter when you're trying to warm your car up.

Alot of people are outraged by this new law. Quite frankly I don't mind a law where the only complaint people have is that they can't continue to be lazy. If you need to shave 5-10 SECONDS off your commute to get where you're going on time, you've got problems.

Anyone else feel they are being SOOOOO inconvenienced? Or better yet anybody been nailed with this fine?

One of the main causes of auto theft is from people leaving their car running. I know turning off your car is a law where I live. I always thought these kind of laws were designed to stop auto theft. A stolen car involves police and that means money from the state.
Cars today don't need the same type of warm up time in the winter as did cars a few years back, so there is really no need to leave an unattended car running.

Can you not leave your car running anywhere in the state, or just not in front of one of these stores?

What is the reasoning behind the law?

I think partially environmental, unnecessary exhaust, etc. And as a safety issue. I have seen myself on three seperate occasion where someone left the car in drive but had the emergency brake on. Lastly an issue of crime and less opportunity to steal cars.

Aside from the fact that NJ never seems to be able to meet clean air standards, I think law enforcement pushed for this one, as so many cars being stolen (some with children in them) had been left running.

I don't have strong feelings one way or the other. I always turn my car off and lock it.

I don't know if it's in front of all stores, but I have heard that the stores themselves would get hit with a hefty fine if the signs were not posted.

I think the convenience stroes have been looked at because obviously you wouldn't leave your car running if you were doing full scale shopping. The problem probably only exists at stores where your running in and out.

Lol, I'll look out for this when I go down to the shore.

I don't leave my car running without me in it, for safety reasons. What if a weirdo jumps in your car and waits for you to come out?:D

I live in New Jersey, and I haven't seen this sign yet anywhere. In fact, this is the first I've heard of it.

Is it a state law? A county one? Or only in certain municipalities?

Born and raised Jersey, there weekly, and I've never heard of this law?

And "nazi" is perhaps a stretch.

It's fine with me because there is NO WAY I'd leave my car running unattended just for the sake of it not being stolen.

I know there are so many good reasons to just comply, but people here and I'm sure most places love to make a big deal about stuff like this.

After our 2hr conversation we ended up with the same conclusion we always do. I'm a tree hugging hippie, and my wife is a greedy me-me-me conservative.

Why on earth would people leave their engine running and the car unattended?
Why not just put a "steal me" sign on the bumper?

Will they fine me if I leave my front door unlocked and someone enters my house and steals all my stuff? This also causes the need for a police presence.

Just being a brat today...:teeth:

This just started about a week ago and not every store yet has it posted. Some of the signs are very small. In fact at our local Wawa it was up for a few days and I didn't even notice it.

Where I come from, they took it one step further. It was against the law to leave anythng in your LOCKED car that might entice a thief. Get caught doing it, pay a fine. Doesn't sound too hard to comply with until you remember that not everything fits in the trunk of many cars. Something like a hockey stick for example. People were getting fined right and left for hockey sticks left in locked cars.

but I can't pump my own gas?
Oh no Monkeyboy! I had forgotten about the "can't pump your own gas" law!!! (that I still don't understand) LOL!!!

Back on the OT, I am way too paranoid to leave the car running. I will have to tell my boss about this, he is big into environmental protection.

Are you kidding? They can't be trusted to turn their cars off when they leave them and you want them to try and pump their own gas?!!!!!

I was born and raised in New Jersey, I'm allowed to say this.
