Okay I am having the worst Google-fu tonight but I found an option that is maybe not so obtrusive and won't set off the metal detectors

Scroll down to the "Lifting a patient from the floor" section - that looks about what your family might need to do:
One sturdy adult gets in boat, holds out end of sling, you step down while other sturdy adult holds you steady, you hover above the sling, and both the other sturdy adults help lower you to a seated position. Reverse order to disembark.
If I can find the other thing I saw, I will add it... it was like a Humane Blanket but you could fold and use the half of it instead of the giant sleeping bag sheet that it is...
