Nausea and cramps

sometimes the only route to go is the bc.......I used to be the one that would miss one or two days of school every cycle.....it skipped my daughter and landed on my granddaughters shoulders.......I told my daughter......why let anyone suffer if they can control the issues with bc.......it is called another name when it is used for this and other issues.......worked like a charm by the way.

Oh, I might need to add that she has a cyst on her right ovary and we've been keeping track and it is worse every other month. (We discovered the cyst during an MRI for another issue but the dr. wasn't concerned about it.) Definately need to think about taking her to a GYN soon. As a matter of fact, I think I wil give them a call now.

ETA: They are closed for lunch. I will call back later. lol

Had I known at 15 what I knew at 18 I would've made my mom let me take bcp!! I started at 11, had my 'visitor' every 21 days, and it lasted 8 days :scared1: I spent 2 days in bed every time. Nothing I took helped. It was the worst.

One time we were on vacation, during my 'visitor', in Chicago and I was SSSSOOOOOO into the Cubs. My dad was trying to get some tickets and I just wanted to die. My mom told my dad that if he couldn't find tickets in the next 10 minutes we were going back to grandma's so I could rest. Well, of course he found tickets. It was one of the worst days I can remember...... (I used to know the starting line-up, averages, personal and professional statistics, etc. and I did not want to be there!)

When I turned 18 I went to Planned Parenthood and got myself on bcp. It was the best thing I ever did (up until that point in my life). So, my advice is talk to a Gyne and see what they recommend....there are a lot of new findings since I was 11 :)

Midol is codiene and the Advil is ibuprofen, so you're not going overboard on either.
I don't think that Midol has codeine it in, I think it's just acetominophen and caffeine. You would probably need a prescription for codeine.

you are right. I goofed, couldn't think of the acetominiphen. I think i got it mixed up it with prescription tylenol which does have codeine in it

Honestly, I don't think any pain killers helped for me. The best thing I could do was find a heating pad. Thermacare have adhesive heating pads so you can go on about your business, they used to be my best friend in HS. I didn't have the nausea, but my knees were so weak that sometimes I couldn't walk from class to class (FUN!)

When I was younger, I'd get my period for 10 days, then I wouldn't have it for 2 weeks, get it for 3 days, go 5 weeks...it was the definition of irregular. Went on BC just to solve that problem and the one I'm on now has helped tremendously for cramps. (Yasmin, btw.)

Good luck to her!

This is a different route than a lot of people are mentioning here, but I had the same thing. Sicker than a dog and cramps like crazy. Had a hard time taking all the Mortin as it is hard on an already sick stomach. I did a lot of research and found that taking the supplement "Evening Primrose Oil" and "Black Currant Seed Oil" helps a great deal. I was desperate and tried everything so thought what the heck. I can tell you that it is a different world now. I take them 365 days a year..I alter my dose to double the week before and week of and then go back to a low dose. I have found this to be incredible. It is a cheap experiment..give it a try.:thumbsup2

For those of you that went on BCP at a young age (or put your kids on them at a young age) did you have any side effects? My dd is 15 and has tried two different low dose pills and both caused severe nausea and vomiting. She has that with her periods already and certainly isn't willing to purposely take something that is going to make her feel worse than she does when she is on her period. I wish I could find a pill that wouldn't make her sick.

I will second, third, fourth what everyone else has said about timing and amounts. If she can start Motrin or Advil at the slightest sign of cramps and maintain the medication in her system, it does help. It isn't perfect but it helps. In my DD's case, she isn't at all regular so taking it a day or two before she starts doesn't work because she doesn't have a clue when she will start. I think she is on day 46 right now. The last one was only 20 days apart. I feel so sorry for her. She has a cyst and endometriosis and this has been an ongoing issue since she was 10. In her next life, she has decided to come back as a man! :rotfl2:

600 mg of Motrin helps me. The gyn put my DD (17) on BC to help with cramps. It gave her even worse cramps than usual. She felt like she was in labor. We even had to take her to the ER. Once she stopped taking the pills, the pain went away.

First switch to Motrin. Have her take it consistently the whole time - the idea is to keep it in her system. Get a prescription strength if you can so she doesn't have to take it as often, or take twice the number of OTC pills at a time - we took 800 mg about every 6 - 8hours.

Motrin was a miracle drug for me and my daughter because it inhibits prostoglandin, and an overage of that hormone/substance can cause more severe cramping.

I agree with this but you could also try Advil liquigel. Advil works in a similar fashion as Motrin. I also agree with keeping it in her system while she's feeling crummy.

Coke (not diet) really helps with nausea. Sip sip sip!

I hope she feels better real soon. BTDT and it sucks monkeytoes.

I feel her pain. I passed out twice in school (both times during band practice on the football field). It got so bad that I would just automatically stay home if I started on a school day. I would throw up and suffer terribly.

The pain lessened a lot after I had my first child, but I still had problems that I won't go into...

At age 34 I went through early menopause. I was ecstatic! I have been cramp-free for almost 20 years now.

Had very bad cramps all my life. Diagnoses with Endometriosis when I was in college. Until that point everyone told me to just use a heating pad, take motrin or ibuprofin but nothing worked. It was debilitating pain for 2-3 days a month.
Then a nurse practioner told me to take Aleve at the very onset of the pain. The naproxen in Alieve was the only thing that would help me. And it was good for almost 8 hrs before I had to take another. So if the other over-the-counter stuff doesn't work for you DD try Aleve. However be carefully to always take w/ food so it doesn't upset the tummy.

Good luck to your DD. I feel for her.

I've always felt far worse when I stay away from my chiropractic appointments, and far better when I am getting them. Since chiro is all about helping the nervous system function with less interference, and since everything is governed by the nervous system, when I'm under care, it seems that whole area works better, and I don't feel as bad.

So I recommend finding a gentle chiropractic practicioner, getting her under care (I started under care at 16), and seeing how that works.

Amen. I have been on vicodin, percocet and tramadol for cramps and they did nothing more than anything I could buy OTC. The ONLY thing that helps at all is heat. I have horrible, debilitating cramps. I can't take BC because my hormones get all whacked out.

A lot of drug stores sell coke syrup for nausea. You poor it over ice and sip slowly (of course it's much thicker than coke). Also, ginger ale is good for nausea.

Just the thought of someone taking Midol makes me want to head for the bathroom and I stopped taking that 30 years ago. Stop taking that for a month and see if that helps.

Damn I wish I wouldn't of done the math.:sad2::scared1::rolleyes:

wvjules,

I know you've gotten all the responses you need right, just thought I'd add my experience.

Back in the dark ages (70s) when this happened to me, I had HORRIBLE cramping and the cramps were so bad I would vomit. I endured this until one time I was away with another family, got my period, and was seriously ill. An older girl there told me that she had the same problems and that her doctor prescribed her Naprosyn (which I believe is now Aleve). I went to my doctor who knew all about it and told me the real trick with it was to start taking it 2-3 days prior to my period as it reduces the prostaglandins that are building up right before your period. So, it worked like a charm.

As I got older things got better and I ended up doing okay with Motrin but, really, it didn't work as well as the naprosyn regimin.

For me it helped fix my hormones :goodvibes Actually helps my migraines too!

I don't specifically remember any side effects (think I was 15 or 16 when I started) but it took me until I was 20 or 21 to find a pill that actually worked...and regulated my period. Trust me, it's super embarrassing to have it start and have nothing on you for it when you're a teen. I definitely feel her pain!
