Natural sleep aid

Wow, I can't believe how many people take Benedryl to fall asleep. I thought I was the only one! I get the generic version, it's around $2 and I take 2 every night.

thanks for the benadryl suggestion. I"ll get that. I also got the melatonin. I'll let him try both. He was taking the tylenol pm but we were both worried about the long term effects of it. It's just benadryl?

Tyenol PM is just benedryl. The new Advil PM isn't listed as the same (but it works well too).

Bendryl works. The children's dosage does allow me to fall asleep and like someone else said, I don't feel "drugged" when waking up and it allows me to sleep just as well without feeling all groggy as an adult dose can do.

All I could think of was sex when I read the post. Between that and the tequila I'm sure he would be sleeping like a baby in no time! :rotfl2: Sorry, I guess that isnt what you had in mind is it? :confused3

I have three college students right now. My life is stressful enough without thinking too much on things. Aack.

One of the other reasons I was thinking melatonin is he's a lifeguard on the beach all summer. He is in the sun 6 days a week 9hrs, plus he goes surfing in his spare time. Could suddenly going from all that natural sunlight to classsrooms and dorms affect his natural chemistry? If so I'm thinking Melatonin will help with this.

Interesting that I find this thread after 2 basically sleepless nights in my college dorm room.

It's possible, but I have more trouble sleeping at school than at home, and I spent virtually my entire summer indoors. Actually I've noticed that I struggle to sleep the first few days after I've been home for a weekend. I wonder if it has something (for me at least) to do with the noises and such in a dorm. At home I'm in an almost entirely pitch black room, whereas at school there are lights shining in. At home the house is silent, with very little road noise because it's such a small town. A dorm is NEVER quiet. Plus school stress of course
One thing that helps me (and I'm guilty of Benedryl use too, but for me it kills 2 birds with one stone...bad allergies and lack of sleep), is to turn on a fan. It dulls out some of the noise that is inevitable. Plus it cools the room down. My dorm is HOT, and I'm used to sleeping in cold air (at home I always either run the AC, or the heat gets turned down at night).

I don't sleep either. I was a worrier before i had teenagers. When they started into the teen years sleep completely vanished. Believe me I suspect his sleep issues come from watching my poor sleep habits.
I'm going to get a fan. That seems like such a good idea. I hope i can find one in stores now, at this time of year. We're going to be near his school next weekend so I"ll be bringing some things down for him.

Try DiY stores (Home Depot or Lowes) or hardware stores, they usually have some no matter what time of year. Good Luck!
