National Scout Jamboree, anyone else going?

Well, tomorrow evening I will depart for Ft. AP Hill, Virginia to take up my place on the staff for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree. This will be my third on staff (2001, 2005, 2010) and eighth over-all (visited 1977, 1981, and 1989... was a contingent leader in 1993 and 1997). This time, for the first time, I'll have a family member along with me. Our 16 year-old son will be a member of our council contingent. (He was in utero when I boarded the troop bus in 1993!) He also met his goal of being able to walk around the Jamboree with an Eagle Scout rank patch on his shirt as he passed this final Board of Review early this month!

Any one else going, or have a family member going to the Jamboree?

I'll be in the Commissary tent in Subcamp 12 if anyone cares!

My 14 year old son leaves Friday with his contingent from the Keystone York Adams Council. He was at Phiolomnt last summer so he is excited about his trip too!

Our Scoutmaster will be attending the Jamboree. He was invited to serve in some capacity.

We recently got back from summer camp at Camp Woodruff in north GA...he could not do both, so he chose the Jamboree...and left us to deal with our little "angels" at summer camp.

Put DH on plane this morning to attend. Well, first a couple of days in Washington DC then to Jambo. He's working in Trading Post D (or sometimes C).

Putting DS17 on plane tomorrow morning to start pre-Jambo tour (Washington, New York, Philadelphia, Gettysburg, ---) then to Jambo.

My sons friend from Blue Water council is leaving on Thursday.

My husband would of liked to go. But, did not have enough vacation time.
He is at Cole canoe base this week and would not of had enough adults to cover him at camp.

Our charter org rep from 1051 is going.

I was in Subcamp 1 in 1993 (we were supposed to be in 2, but that's a long story)... I hope his hiking shoes are broken in as that place is a long way from everything except the Aquatics and Action Center D (and there was no Action Center D in 1993)!!!

My son leaves Sunday night from Rochester, NY and will be in Sub Camp 3 - thanks for the link to that! We will be traveling down to visit for a few days while he's there as well.

I haven't been there in some time, but I went as a Scout in 1985 and '89, and was a staffer at one of the trading posts in 1993. (Forget which one - we were over by the merit badge midway though.)

DS is old enough to start Cubs next year - maybe we will go out and at least visit the next one. Both he and DD will be old enough to appreciate some of the side trips, and maybe a couple days in the DC area.

That would have been Trading Post "A". It's still there, but in 2001 they moved the Merit Badge Midway over by the visitor parking area near the arena.

Also, this is likely the last Jamboree that will be at Ft. AP Hill. The BSA is building a new site, that they own... The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia. It is the site of a re-claimed strip mine. The Bechtel Foundation has given the BSA $50M to redevelop the site. The only asterisk to this is that the next Jamboree is slated for 2013 and in case the Bechtel site isn't ready, they've optioned AP Hill for one more event if needed.

My son went in 89 and although I had surgery just 5 days before I went to the opening ceremonies that year. It was incredible. I did go the next day and walked the campsites with him too. There was so much for the boys to do to keep busy. He spent most of his time at the rappling towers, he loved that.
His best memories of growing up were the Jamboree and going to Philmont in AZ. he is now a Marine and I am sure that Scouts prepared him for boot camp much more than anything else in his life.

MY dh leaves at 6:30 tomorrow morning. We visted in 2001 to see ds1. In 2005 dh went with both ds's and I visited with some friends who also had sons going.

Both times we got to see the closing ceremony.

Dh will be working Motocross this year. He will be gone for over 2 weeks. He will get home on our 32nd anniversary. Like he's going to be in any condition to celebrate.

My dh got to got to Florida Seabase with older son and Philmont with younger son. Both trips they will not forget.

CONGRATULATIONS to your DS for reaching the rank of EAGLE!!!

I have two EAGLES. One who is actually heading to law school in the Fall and this summer he is a RANGER at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron. He has been there since April 1st. This is his second summer as a Ranger. Philmont is one amazing adventure, as my DS tells me. He will trek out into the back woods tomorrow with a group of 20 Boy Scouts who just arrived from Japan. There will be a translater with my DS.

Both DS' spent many summers treking to Ft. AP Hill when we lived in MA.

In 2008 we moved to Newport Beach, CA from MA and here is some interesting history as our NB condo was right off JAMBOREE ROAD.

Jamboree Road
Jamboree Road is one of the major thoroughfares in Orange County, running from just west of Irvine Lake, all the way south to Pacific Coast Highway.

But it used to be just a gravel road running from the Irvine Ranch Boy Scout Troop 36 Clubhouse, near Irvine Boulevard and Myford Road, down to Newport Beach, about 8 miles of road. It was created in 1953, in preparation for the third National Boy Scout Jamboree held July 17-23, 1953.

The Jamboree was the first ever held west of Mississippi River. It was a big event for Orange County, perhaps one of the key events putting Orange County on the map.

The site of the Jamboree is located where today's Newport Center and Eastbluff communities in Newport Beach now stand.
At the height of the festivities, the Jamboree was a city unto itself. People called it, "Jamboree Town".

My son went to the last Jamboree. One thing to remember it's going to be very hot and humid so drink, drink, and drink some more. It's very important to have plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

He had a great time at the Jamboree, did lots of activities and meet many different people. He still talks about his time spend at the Jamboree, especially when we drive past Fort AP Hill while on driving trips.

Too far for us to travel. However, our local BSA is celebrating "A Shining Light Across America" on the 31st at the university where DH works. There will be interviews with local Scouts at the Jamboree as well as other things planned for the 100th anniversary.

We're not sure if we will be able to attend or not. DS8 started his first time at Cub Scout Day Camp yesterday. He is going this week and next week and I'm not sure if he's going to be wiped out by that Saturday or not. Today he got up between 4 am and 5 am (he didn't have to get up until 6:30 ). It caught up to him on the way home this afternoon and he was very "cranky" where he practically had a meltdown. He started falling asleep around 8 this evening. He's never attended a camp before, but he's having so much fun.

Congratulations on your son making Eagle Scout! My dad is an Eagle, and he went to the National Jamboree when Boy Scouts was celebrating 50 years!

My own son is a first year Boy Scout so we still have quite a road in front of us. I think there are three older boys going to the National Jamboree.

Thanks... our son is a 4th generation Eagle. He's been working on staff at our local camp from June 5th and he'll have a day and a half from the time they release him until he boards the bus on Friday. He actually hopes to return to camp after he returns from the Jamboree and finish out the Summer there! The kid's hard core!

I can relate... my wife is a "Jamboree widow" too as our Anniversary is on August 2nd. In 2005 the Jamboree ended on August 2nd, and I raced home to get home before dark. Normally we celebrate by eating out at someplace nice before I leave... but things have been so busy this year that our "celebration" consisted of eating Filet-O-Fish sandwiches tonight shoulder-to-shoulder with other parents at the local hockey rink as we watched the aforementioned Eagle play in a High School summer league hockey game! How romantic can you get!
