National Dean's List--know anything about it?

Is it for real or a money-maker? What are the advantages, if any, to being on this list?

Thanks!

It's a money-maker. They put your name in a book and try to sell you the book.

I've heard that a professor has to nominate you to it. Is that true? I am assuming you are still on the list even if you do not purchase said book. Right?

just use your head

A National Dean's list?

Since when does the United States even HAVE a National Dean? Just Google the name and you'll see plenty about it.

Nearly all of these books are just bogus moneymakers. I once saw somebody brag on here about getting into one for Americas Top Teachers. I didn't have the heart to tell them that particular organization sent me a nomination letter, and I'm not even a teacher. I had just purchased a couple of Third Grade readers from a textbook publisher for home use.

These books are like, the "we'll publish your poetry books," "short story" books, and even "your picture was chosen as a winner."

The scam is this: You receive a letter stating that your name was submitted on for the Dean's List. In the packet, it will state in very small print, that the book you purchase will have your name in it.

Notice it says the book you purchase will have your name in it.

So, while your name is in the book you purchase, your name might or might not be in the book I purchase. And, my name won't be in the book you purchase.

So, companies charge more money than they should because they know people will purchase the book just to see their names.

No one really looks at the book when you apply for that job. It's just a scam to get you to pay for a book that has your name in it.

BTW, I almost fell for the "pet Picture" book. Our local consumer advocate just happened to be doing a report on these books. I read the fine print and noticed, yep, he is exactly right.

Just to be sure that I was not thinking of a different "national honor" type thing, I did a quick google search and came up with another message board posting asking basically the same question on a site called PATH or parents asking teachers help--something like that. One person said she had recieved several "invitations" to join this exclusive group, but she was not even in college. Basically, everyone there told her it was a scam. Even the website for this National Dean's List has a FAQ page that shows it's $70 to buy the book and that they also sell other items. Their site says it's an honor bestowed on the top 10% of a class or students with a B+. No purchase necessary. And they do offer scholarships.

BTW, my high school daughter has gotten several similar nominations from "national something or the other" type places. I guess what most convinced me that it was a money making scam was that her grades are merely average and she's in the middle of her class...not anywhere near the top 10%.

I hope this helps!

Interesting... our offer does not say the thing about "your book". It says that my son was nominated by one of his professors which is believable since his English Professor chose him as an emerging scholar and he has received other awards along with being on the President's list at college for having all A's.

Thanks for the feedback, though...

Dean's list at a college is what matters.

National Dean's List is a money making scam, like many of the high school ones. I can't think of anyone who didn't get nominated to "who's who in American high schools", except maybe someone who was lucky enough to get left off of that mass-marketing list!

I am not sure how you got the letter you did, but there is a Who's Who Among Teachers. You have to be nominated by a past student, administrator or professor. It tells you on the nomination form who nominates you. You don't have to buy anything to be included in the book. It is an honor that you can list on your resemue.

It is a scam. When the letter mentioned my son's grades and some other high achievement words - I thought, "my son", they are not talking about my son. I would say my son is a bit below average so I know they were not talking about him.

You don't have to buy the book to be listed in the book.
I think it should be considered an honor, your son can list it on his resume.
I'm sure they would like to sell you a book, but you don't have to buy.
I have been listed in Who's Who Among Teacher several times and I have not bought anything other than a plaque.
Not just anyone can nominate for these things- I am not saying that they are not a money maker eihter.

Being asked to join Phi Beta Kappa is an honor. And I repeat, National Dean's List is a scam. How do I know? I used to be a college professor and I currently serve on a PBK selection committee.

I don't want to get into a debate about this but all of the Who's Who (there's one for almost every level of education and profession) are scams/money makers. You can even "nominate" yourself. If you doubt me, contact them and nominate yourself. Then wait for the book solicitations to follow.

ITA with this. Having your name listed *is* an honor, esp the Who's Who list - that list is actually published in the graduation program at my college. I wouldn't spend the money on the book, but it is a nice addition to the resume ;) Of course, as the previous poster mentioned, so is PBK (I'm a member of that too  :teeth: )

it's a huge moneymaker and a big scam. my DSIS got one that said she was nominated by a prof...well her grades were bad when she was in school and she wasn't even in school anymore when it came  she got a big kick out of it and still has the paper :lmao:

Well I guess I could list it on my resume, but since my career path is Accounting and Systems Analysis, I don't think it would impress anybody much.

Plus they'd probably say something like

"Well tell me about your teaching career."

and then I'd have to say

"I've never been a teacher, that's just a letter that came in the mail and I thought it sounded snazzy so I stuck it on my resume."

:confused3

I agree with this. I'd join PBK or Phi Sigma Pi (a national honor fraternity-different from PBK though-both are honors to be nominated for) before wasting money on this list. My undergrad actually refused to provide this "organization" with information, so I was never nominated. That's how highly they thought of them, if that means anything.
