I just read this on Mousesavers.com ....

National doesn't overcharge quite as badly as the others: "The TollPass Convenience Charge is a $2.00 charge for each day you use a toll express lane on roadways covered by [the] TollPass provider, up to a maximum of $6.00 per rental, plus the cost of all unpaid tolls."

Can anyone confirm this? Have you used it?

We will be renting a car from National for 8 days beginning Friday and am interested ... that is, if it will only cost me $6 to use this service above and beyond the cost of tolls. Do they just add the charge to your credit card? Is it at the time of returning the car, or is it later? Please let me know if you have used the service and how it worked for you.

Thanks.

Wow ... lot's of views on this question ... but nobody with experience?

unless on expense account;)don't see any benefit other than convenience factor to use ezpass lane...if it makes you happy go for it.

btw, it typically is $2.50/day or $10/week

the toll's will be charged directly to your CC linked to reservation, i believe u still have to add the feature to reservation...or risk getting hit with the penalty fee ($25?) for each toll.

Thanks, this link helps a lot to clarify the situation. Looks like I'll be taking quarters with me! LOL!

Just my 2cents. Dh accidentally used the ez lane last trip. I thought he missed the toll, (if I recall it is similiar to the rest areas where we live), but htere was no way we could find to remedy the situation. Low and behold we got a ticket mailed to us. $15. So, we will be getting the pass when we visit again. :)

we're run into issue of not having change for un-manned on on southern route back to MCO.

National sent us a very nice letter:rolleyes1indicating that rightfully we should've been paying for the transponder on the window if we were going to utililze it. they indicated they'd waive the penalty fee & surcharge since mr is ExA. Oddly enough I never did see the small charge on the CC for the actual toll, assume National paid it in name of customer satisfaction?

ive gotten the sort of letter you reference and accompanying glossy of my my plate courtesy the PA turnpike too (when same mr was driving 'my' car). There are no points or insurance issues as long as it's paid within the stated time in PA.

I just returned from Orlando and used National Car Rental while I was there. I purchased the toll package for $6.64 which was not charged to my credit card until I returned the car. A week later my credit card was charged for all of the tolls that I went through with the rental car. Here is a website: htallc.com/nationalcar This will explain it all to you and will also give you a receipt that will list all of the tolls and prices that will be charged to your credit card. You just need your rental agreement # and last name to access it. Hope this helps!

I think it's despicable that a toll road has areas in which all of the toll booths are unmanned. Particularly a toll road that handles a lot of tourists.

Although this is about National, for reference of others that may search about this service. Hertz offers a similar program called PlatePass, there is no enrollment required in Florida. Driving through the tolls works perfectly, you incur a $2.50 fee for each use up to a maximum of $10.00 per rental month plus the cost of tolls.

To me, the $10.00 cost is worth it, whether driving on personal travel or business because it saves time and reduces the need to carry cash or coins. A few days after the end of your rental you can go to PlatePass.com, enter the rental agency, rental agreement and return date and view all of the PlatePass charges.

Get used to it. Florida has begun converting to all electronic tolling (no manned tollbooths at all, and no coin stations). It's starting in Miami area, but will probably be in Orlando soon. Considering how hard it is to get away from the airport without paying a toll, I expect it will be on added all my rentals from MCO from now on...

in Toronto, our Toll Highway is all electronic... it works.

On Florida's Turnpike and toll roads operated by the Turnpike, ALL toll plazas are staffed 24/7. This includes mainline toll plazas as well as those at entrance and exit ramps. The only exceptions are exits marked SUNPASS ONLY; at those you must have a transponder or be using the PlatePass program offered by some car rental companies. But there is only 1 such SUNPASS ONLY exit ramp in Orange County.

On other Orlando toll roads, meaning those operated by the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority, ALL mainline toll plazas are staffed 24/7. Tolls at entrance and exit ramps are never staffed.

Bottom line, a tourist traveling to the tourist areas should never encounter a toll plaza that is unstaffed:
AIRPORT TO DISNEY VIA TOLL 528: 2 toll plazas, both staffed 24/7
AIRPORT TO DISNEY VIA TOLL 417: 2 toll plazas, both staffed 24/7; should you stay on longer and exit at Osceola Parkway, there is an unstaffed exit ramp plaza there.

I believe currently only the express lanes on I-95 in Miami-Dade County are SUNPASS/TOLL-BY-PLATE only. Next year the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike is going electronic only. In Tampa, TOLL 618 (Selmon Crosstown Expressway) went all electronic last month.

I'm sure Orlando could and will go all electronic in the future, but this is not something imminent.

Just made a reservation with National and the below is located in their policy information on the rental web page. :thumbsup2

If you or any driver operate the rental vehicle in Northern California, Florida, Colorado, or Texas, and generate an unpaid toll, you will be charged our Toll Pass Convenience Charge of $2.00 for each day you use a toll road or bridge plus the cost of all unpaid tolls. The maximum Toll Pass Convenience Charge for the rental period is $6.00, plus the cost of all unpaid tolls. For information call (877) 860-1283. If you or any driver operate the rental vehicle in areas not served by TollPass and generate any unpaid toll(s) then you will be charged for all unpaid tolls and an administrative charge of up to $25.00 per rental.

I don't have experience with National...but we just came back and used Enterprise..they are owned by the same parent company....and that was the way it worked with us....

So I can't find where to sign up for the toll service with National - one website I found said there was no signup required and just gets activated if you go through one of the automated lanes. Anyone have any experience with this?

That is the way it is with Hertz, so I would guess it would be the same.

How does this work exactly? I just got back from a trip and wasn't really sure what to do when driving through the EZPASS lanes - I didn't really stop...was I supposed to have slowed down to a certain speed or something??

This is how it works with Alamo. We've used it twice. No signup was required, at least when I asked at the desk back in October. This time I didn't even bother asking so I hope nothing has changed!

Just drive normally, keeping up with the flow of traffic. I wouldn't recommend slowing down and certainly not stopping since traffic is coming up behind you at 55+ MPH.

ETA: If you are talking about driving through a toll booth then yes there is usually a posted speed limit, usually 10mph or so. On the drive between MCO and WDW you don't go through any toll booths, you stay on the highway. There are cameras above the highway lanes that take a picture of your license plate as you cruise along at highway speeds.
