National Anthem....

Celine sang "God Bless America" on one of the 9/11 specials that aired soon after the attack. When that special became available on DVD, I went right out and bought it. Just to hear it again. And the tears well up every time I listen to Celine sing it. I thought that the Dixie Chicks' performance was equally incredible. Although I didn't shed tears during the National Anthem, I did feel very uplifted by their performance. It's very hard to put into words, but "Proud To Be An American" springs to mind.

I agree with the above post. An "american" should have sung the song "God Bless America"

. Do you think Canada would have a mexican or a US citizen sing there National Anthem?

SO sorry, BUT God Bless America is not our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner is.

I think the Chicks did a beautiful job with a song that is very hard to sing.

I also like Celines voice, I have no problem with her singing Gdd Bless America, a tune that "was composed by an immigrant who left his home in Siberia for America when he was only five years old. The original version of "God Bless America" was written by Irving Berlin (1888-1989) during the summer of 1918 at Camp Upton, located in Yaphank, Long Island, for his Ziegfeld-style revue, Yip, Yip, Yaphank. "Make her victorious on land and foam, God Bless America..." ran the original lyric. However, Berlin decided that the solemn tone of "God Bless America" was somewhat out of keeping with the more comedic elements of the show and the song was laid aside. "
(Stole that from the web) Royalties from this song are paid to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.

I don't see how anyone can really answer your question because they are not the ones who would make the decision about someone singing the anthems for Mexico or Canada. Do you think that if Jennifer Lopez offered to sing the Mexican Anthem during a televised soceer match the Mexican government would say no? I doubt they would, but because it is the practice of most countries to have their anthem sung by a citizen we'll probably never know for sure. Why does it matter that Celine Dion sang "God Bless America"? She may not be a citizen but she does live here (Las Vegas and Miami), so technically it is her "home sweet home". I didn't realize citizenship was a requirement for singing a song about a country especially if that song is NOT the anthem.

LOVED the Dixie Chicks rendition. And did have tears in my eyes. They did a fantastic job.

Of course my favorite version our anthem is the 1/2 hour version by Bleeding Gums Murphy! ;)

I wish folks would understand this! I get so peeved when folks sing GBA loudly and stand around talking during the national anthem!
