Did anyone else think that Aretha Franklin and Aaron Neville just murdered the national anthem? I thought it was horrible!!!

I thought that it didn't sound very good and that Neville seemed a little unsure of the wording. They could have done much better. The sound system didn't sound very good either.

Embarrassing. Not sure why people think it's wise to bring up these people who are far beyond they days of being good.

It was terrible. Two excellent singers, but in this case it was just horrible.

I agree...the song sounds nothing like it's supposed to sound like......terrible.

That's what we thought too (of course, the Rolling Stones were even worse).

I too thought it was awful. I was never a fan of Aaron Nevilles style of singing, nor Aretha Franklins......together it was even worse.

It was awful! It seemed like they figured "ok, I'm only singing half of this song, so I have to drag it out as long as possible so I get the most tv exposure." They each tried to put so much emotion into it, that it was just way too much and ruined the anthem.

Aretha is far beyond being good? Aaron Neville is also? I don't believe that.

I wish that I had seen the preshow so I could understand what happened. But I can't imagine that these two are beyond being good.

Actually, I thought it was pretty good. Franklin did a great job, however I think technical issues did Neville in. It sounded like his mic levels weren't right... he kept clipping in and out.

I wouldn't say they were beyond being good but maybe they both felt the need to live up to some grand expectations and went way overboard. They embellished when they should not have and it really didn't add to the song or make them sound very good. It was one of the worst renditions I've ever heard.

I agree....completely awful. It was so over the top. And why was Aretha wearing a fur coat?

Sounded like they were having mic issues throughout. Did Inda Arie's mic work at all during her performance?

I agree.

Not that these two performers are not talented... But, it just did not come off well. I think that this was all well intentioned, but not well thought out or rehearsed. ;)

I'm wondering about the sound work at this superbowl period. No one seems to like anything.

I thought Aretha was a little bit better than Aaron, but not much. I said to my DH, 'well, that was a horrible version.'

And the Stones. Those people are legends, but they are past their prime. I would rather see people in their prime for an event like the SB.

I agree! It was horrible, my Kids asked "Mommy what SONG is that"? :guilty:

Why do performers in the USA always embellish your anthem? In most other countries, performerts sing the national anthem in the manner it was intended not their own personal interpretation.
