How much does National charge for an additional driver when renting a car? I thought I read somewhere that you don't pay for an additional driver when you are in the emerald club or is that only when renting from the emerald aisle. When your reserve a car that does'nt come up and I don't want any surprises at check-in. Thanks, Linda

National has told me that if the additional driver is your spouse (and lives at the same address) and you are an Emerald Club member. If the additional driver is someone else, you have to sign them up at the counter.

Thanks you're right it was on mousesavers for a family member living in your household with a clean drivers license and a credit card no add'l fee charged. Thanks, Linda

I've gotten free add'l driver for business associates travelling with me while I used EA...National.

Free membership in the EA is currently available-- definitely sign up for it- it's GREAT!
Oh and to answer your question-- several years ago it was $7 a day for your spouse if you weren't EA-- we made a huge to-do about that because I think that should be easily found in their advertising and adds up to a significant amount over a long vacation. They eventually rebated the charge but I learned my lesson and joined EA immediately on returning home. Budget doesn't charge this fee btw; and Avis waives it for AAA members.

I think Thrifty and Dollar also charge the fee and have no way around it but would love to hear otherwise.

I did once use a discount code and coupon from Costco's for a car rental but I'm not sure if it was Dollar or Alamo and they told me my membership with Costco's waived the add'l driver fee, so I guess it sometimes depends on the discount you use. Linda

Alamo doesn't charge for the additional driver if you use the Walmart code 430710. I also got the free additional driver with my BJ's membership for my August reservation. However, I was checking rates the other day, and any new quotes I got did not list the additional driver.
