We've just taken out the Nat West rental car insurance ready for our trip in a couple of weeks. This is the first time we haven't pre-paid for insurance in the UK, so it's all new to us.

The insurance covers both DH and myself, but will we still have to pay Dollar their 'extra driver' charges? (Hope this isn't a completely stupid question! )

Hilary,

We paid the Extra Driver fee this last trip when we went - though I must admit I just put 2 & 2 together rather than ask so I could have been wrong
When I booked my car hire, I did it via the US website for Dollar so that I could use a code and it said on there about how much the extra driver fee was. As it was a US site, and just about all American's would already have their own personal insurance - I assumed that paying the extra driver was more about legally giving you the right to drive the car, rather than an insurance thing.

Like I said though - this is what I decided in my infinate wisdom - and that so often proves to be flawed so I'm not sure this helps at all! :)

Rick,

You need to ring 01273 765340 - there they can send you a little copy of their leaflet with info on plus a specimin of the actual policy.

Basically how it works is - you need a Natwest CC (ANY one qualifies), the policy costs £75 per year and covers up to 6 named drivers (you can add names to the policy later on if you need) and you have to pay for the policy and the car hire (or holiday if you are booking a included car) with your Natwest card too.

Hi Hilary, yes you are right - you do have to pay for the "right" to have an extra driver. IMHO it's just a con to get more money, after all the car can only be driven by one driver at any given time. It's only got one engine, one steering wheel, one set of wheels, etc.

I do all the driving and we don't pay for the extra driver. We figure that, should Tony need to drive, then we (hopefully) would be able to phone the car rental company and organise it!
