Nassau question

Taking our second Disney cruise in January (first for kids). DD 22 is special needs and uses a wheelchair for any long distances and a walker around the house. Looking at excursions in Nassau, none look exceptionally accessible for her. Any thoughts or comments?

Also - I know she would love to do the hair braiding thing we saw done in Nassau. Any idea in cost or how long it takes? How does it compare to having it done on ship?

Thinking about sending rest of party on to Atlantis while she, DS4 and I stay in port. Good idea? Bad idea?

A lot of the streets in the older area of Nassau (including the port area) have very narrow, and irregular sidewalks. They can be tricky for walking. I imagine that using a walker or wheelchair on the sidewalks would be very challenging, and simply not possible on some streets.

DH and I took one of DCL's less strenuous trips to Atlantis. The company providing the bus transfers, which I believe were partly financed by the resort (?) was able to accommodate guests with smaller wheelchairs or walkers. That said, the excursion that included touring the resort and the aquarium required far more walking than we expected. I would guess we walked well over a mile.

Hey SonicGuy - My DW and I cruised to Nassau with Disney in 2009, and I we both decided that next time we were in Nassau, we would just stay on the ship.
We just walked around the 8-10 block radius around the port area, and we weren't impressed at all. Even if you stay on the ship, you'll have the ship nearly to yourself, and you'll have a lot more time to do things that your DD might not be able to do while everyone else is on the ship.

Not knowing her degree of ability - but here are just a few things that come to mind..
A manicure (I'm sure the ladies at the spa would fuss over her, and even do some special Disney design for her!)
Other spa treatment that would make her feel special?
The hair wrap you suggested
Time in the pool almost to herself!
Aquaduck shorter lines (if she is able)
Perhaps if you ask ahead of time and follow up with Disney - maybe they could schedule a character experience, or you could ask if there will be any characters in the kids club that day, and take her in and stay with her during that time.
How about the shallow water Dolphin Interaction at Atlantis?

I'm sure there are a good deal of things you can do that would really interest her and be entertaining!

If you need other suggestions, I'll keep thinking!

Hello,

Thanks for asking! My DD is 19 and uses a wheelchair full time. We are planning our 1st cruise, we go in Oct. :)

My DM uses a walker and a wheelchair for anything more than a short block. We went on the Andrasta Gardens excursion. You see flamingos and other tropical birds. You also get a nice tour of the town. We found it very entertaining. After the excursion we went shopping near the ship.

I not sure about other things you wish to do in Nassau, but I want to make you aware of a few Threads about kids picking up Hair Beasties from these places at ports that do the Braiding. And if Disney find out someone has these they keep them in their Cabin the rest of the Cruise I believe.

Just be careful as I wouldn't want your Cruise to be ruined by this happening.

I would stick to Disney Hair Braiding just in case. :)

Never thought about that. Thanks so much.
