Found out last night that my baby niece (who is 23!!) wants to move out of state to Nashville!! She has her degree and one year of professional experience in a good job in Marketing, but she is bored with the local scene. She's also frustrated with the siingles scene (or whatever they call it LOL)

My Sister is beside herself because the economy is terrible everywhere, and of course, would miss her DD. Her DD moved back home after college graduation :)

Another niece (from hubby's side) toyed with the idea of Nashville awhile ago too but never moved there. Both are in bands (not country) on the side, but not their *real* jobs, and yet the appeal of all the music is a real draw I think.

Anyone here live in or around Nashville? Whats the job scene like for young professionals? Whats the dating scene like? Any input appreciated.

I too would miss her greatly, because shes a gem and a big part of my family's life too.

(And btw, I am NOT letting my kids grow up and move out! Period! :scared1::laughing:

It depends on where you live now.
Nashville has alot more activity than places like Akron.
The job scene is still a little tight as places closed down from the spring flooding.

That being said, my wife had no problem landing an at home job with a firm just south of Nashville in Franklin.

I live in the Nashville area. I wont be too much help for you because I have not been looking for a job or dating for a very long time, but I will do my best - LOL.

Nashville was not devastated by the recession or the housing bubble. We just re-fied our house and it appraised $30,000 higher than our purchase price 9 years ago. While there were layoffs, I personally only know of 1 person who lost his job. I am sure that like everywhere hiring has slowed down, but I don't think it would be impossible to find a job. Earlier this year, my DH was put on 2 weeks of furlough, but his company is now making budget.

I know even less about the dating scene, but there are 5 universities in the area, so I would assume there are plenty of young professionals out there. Nashville is a vibrant city. It's safe (of course use common sense), there is a good cultural base. We have a ballet company, symphony, Broadway touring company theater, and museums. And of course some great music!

Hopefully someone can come along and offer you some more relevant info for you, but I love living here.

Wow, thank you very much for your reply! It sounds like a wonderful place. Hmm maybe we can move there too! I'm sure my sister would love for me to keep an eye on my niece! :rotfl:

Anyone else with any feedback?

I would pick Austin, TX over Nashville in a minute. Tons of nightlife. I know several young people in their 20s who live there. Very active social life. One quit her marketing job and then found another a week later without even looking.

The Texas economy is probably the healthiest in the nation.

The music industry has suffered some from the economy. Labels like Lyric Street (Disney label that had Rascal Flatts) closed up shop for example. I know of several people with many years of experience who have lost their jobs and have not been able to find work back in the field. They are working retail jobs just to be able to pay the bills.

Good luck to your niece.

Did I read the OP wrong? I thought the niece was in marketing, not music.

She asked what the job scene was like for young professionals. I would think that most people would think of the music industry when thinking of Nashville and the marketing and music industries can be closely linked in that town in particular.

While Nashville hasn't been hit as hard by the economy as some areas, it still has been hit some. Also, be aware that Nashville suffered a devasting flood in May that national media decided to ignore for the most part, for some reason. Many downtown businesses were destroyed as was the Opry Mills Mall. The mall and many businesses are still closed. I just wanted you to be aware, but I'm not sure if this will affect your neice or not.

Pre-flood I have worked several cases of parents moving down there for work -- they needed court approval since the other parent was not in favor of the kids moving. Since the job market here is beyond impossible & the parents could demonstrate they had obtained great jobs there & nothing here to support themselves and the kids, all got approval.
