Has anyone else heard about this. R.J. Reyonlds, the Winston Cup people. May sell out the cup to Nextel!!! So no longer would it be The Winston Cup, but now Earnhardt, Gordon, Newman, and the rest would be racing for the Nextel Cup! Ewwwwwwwww. Your thoughts?

Looks like it is gonna' be the "Nextel Cup".

Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it?

But remember, before "Winston Cup", it was called merely "Grand National".

although I would hate to see it.....what would happen if Newman won the cup in his alltel ford????

Change happens. Before the Winston Cup it was the Grand National Cup. You'll get used to it.

I think it's going to be called NASCAR Nextel Cup. It will be hard to get use to. I hear RJ Reynolds still might sponsor The Winston race. I read that the Alltel & Cingular sponsors will be Grandfathered in, but AT&T might have a hard time becoming a sponsor which they are a small sponsor but were suppose to become a major sponsor, possibly for Jeff Burton. Guess we'll have to wait & see.

I think it was bound to happen. "Big tobacco" doesn't have the big bucks it used to and with Nascar getting so popular, they have become much more image-conscious and being affiliated with a cigarette company is not very cool by todays standards. I have been a fan for many years and it is going to be strange to call it something other than Winston Cup. As the first poster said - change is hard!

P.S. On another note, we are very excited that we picked up a second race here in CA - we have PSL seats and can't wait for our Labor Day night race next year! :Pinkbounc

It's a done deal. NASCAR Nextel Cup is the official title. They've got a 10 year contract. Cigarettes are being run out of association with "sports". Now, they are going after them in film, too by berating actors who smoke.

I agree. I don't really care what it is called, I watch for the racing not's whose name is on the Cup. It may take a few years, but we will get used to it.

The funny thing is think of all the sales they will have to have at the last couple of races to get rid of all the products that say Winston Cup!

Nextel is a good fit. It is also a more youthful sponsor and cell phones don't have too much negative associated with them. Just think of all the cool electronics that may come out of this partnership.

This could be a good thing.............you used to be able to trade in your open pack a cig's for a couple of new pack's. Maybe you will now be able to trade in your "used phone" for a new one!!

LOL, that would be cool. Since this is a NASCAR thread GO SMOKE!
:D

Idunno NASCAR Nextel Cup definetly sounds LESS bumpkiny. I think it is a great marketing move on NASCAR's part not only since cigarette smoking is harmful but because Nextel is such a part of corporate America now.

I think it is a good thing for them, getting rid of the smoking influence. Now if they will just change and let them race for real.

I think that they HAVE to do it. When the tobacco industry settled a suit a few years ago with several states, one of the provisions is that, within a certain period of time, they would no longer serve as sponsors for sporting events.

It's been happening gradually. This is just a big event.

Well, if the association with tobacco needs to go, then so does Bud, Coors Light, Miller Lite. Looks like Jr., Marlin and Wallace will need to find different sponsors.

I mean, they ARE driving cars sponsored by beer. Wouldn't that be condoning drinking and driving?

Oh wait, they're not drinking and driving, are they? It's just a sponsorship. Silly me!
