Retreat to the shores of the Seven Seas Lagoon in this airy, eight-sided waterfront pavilion. Enjoy spectacular views and even finer dining. Named for a quaint Florida town, this eatery offers small-town charm and big-city culinary expertise. Creative North American seafood offerings are highlighted by Maine lobster, fanny bay oysters and wild Alaskan salmon. And there's filet mignon, too! This octagonal restaurant is "ate" times the fun.
Narcoossees, Thursday, November 11, 2004
We have started a grand family tradition of dining with my sister-in-law Lynn and her husband Tom each year when they visit in Florida. Last year we went to Citricos and had a great time. This year I selected Narcoossees because I had never eaten there and I know Chef Phil and the Manager Becky had both recently moved over there from Yachtsman Steakhouse.
Our Priority Seating was for 7:30pm, and we arrived early after a full day of Disney fun (MGM, Downtown Disney & Epcot). In the lobby they were putting the finishing touches on the large Christmas Gingerbread House, so we watched as the head pastry chef carefully added the hidden Mickeys to the building.
When we got over to Narcoossees it was just around 7:15pm, we were given a blinking beeper, but just as we reached the bar, it had already gone off. So we were seated along side the window, with a clear view of the Magic Kingdom and the Seven Seas Lagoon.
The restaurant, as you know, is almost circular in shape and there are three rings of tables, one along the windows, the second slightly smaller as the center ring and a third that is elevated and closet to the center bar. Most every table has a view but not to worry, if you want to watch Wishes or the Electrical Light Pageant, just step outside on the wrap around deck.
Our server Tom arrived and took our drink orders, we asked what he recommended and he tried to steer us towards the soup, the tuna, and the filet. Tom was an excellent server, very attentive but not overbearing. Did not rush us along and let us sit and enjoy our evening.
Appetizers
I ordered the Langostino and Crab Cake (honey truffle aioli, Arugula and pine nuts $12.00) and was very pleased with the selection; it was delivered on a large square plate and had two lumps of cakes. They were loose and flavorful.
Tom ordered the Romaine Hearts Salad (with Caesar dressing and Reggiano Parmesan cheese $9.00) and that was delivered on a long slender plate with whole leafs.
Both girls had the Yellow Tomato Gazpacho (with rock shrimp, lump crab meat, and a sourdough crostini $9.00) and they really liked it!
Just before 8pm, Tom came to our table and told us that Wishes was starting at 8pm, and that he would time our order to arrive after Wishes if we wanted to watch the show. We said we would and at 7:55pm, we stepped outside to watch. They dimmed the lights on the deck and the entire soundtrack was piped onto the deck for us to hear. It was perfect!
For dinner, Lynn ordered the Grilled Wahoo and Rock Shrimp (served on a pillow of roasted tomato risotto with a basil butter broth $31.00) but kept asking exactly what fish Wahoo came from. She initially thought the fish was on the dry side, but loved the risotto. Tom took a taste and disagreed that it was not dry.
I ordered the Grilled Filet Mignon (with potato gratin and a mushroom red wine sauce $33.00). The filet was medium rare as ordered, it was very good, the gratin was really good, not your normal cut section of potato, but rather more like a cake shaped serving.
Tom ordered the Sesame-Crusted Ahi Tuna (seared rare with Tamari sticky rice, stir-fry vegetables, and wasabi cream $30.00), funny because he ordered Tuna at Citricos last year and again he was extremely satisfied with his selection.
OK, forgive me; I cant remember what Jeanette had for dinner.
Time for Dessert!
Lynn ordered the Fruit Cobbler with cinnamon ice cream ($7.00) and really enjoyed it!
Jeanette got the Key Lime Crème Brulee ($6.00) and she too raved about it.
Both Tom and I got the Semi-sweet Caramel Chocolate Dome (with raspberries $6.00) and let me tell you this was wonderful! The dish had the dome, lightly covered with a chocolate lace blanket, and the plate had dots of chocolate, white chocolate and raspberry sauces. And at the bottom of the dome there was a layer of chocolate cake with raspberry flavor. Cant say enough good things about this dessert.
Tom and Lynn both agreed that we were two-for-two on our annual selections. I have read too many negative reviews about Narcoossees but most of they were very dated. With the new staff mentioned, maybe its time to give them try!
