Napping

DD will be 4 the first week of May and she still naps but not for as long as she once did. We can even skip naps on some days. I'm going to let her continue napping as long as she seems to need it but I suspect she'll be done with them (at least on a regular basis) by next year when she goes to school.

My first was 4&1/2, my second was 3&1/2, my third one is 2&1/2 and is only napping 50% of the time.:confused3

My dd is 2.5 and still really needs a nap. Sometimes I think she might not because we'll give her a nap and she'll usually sleep 2 hours and then won't want to go to bed at night. But - today for example, we've been out and about all day with no nap and she had a meltdown tonight during dinner out. She was clearly very tired. She definitely still needs a nap so it was a good test.

Both boys, right at 2 years, 3 months. Strange.
It got to a point that if they napped at all, even 20 min. in car during day, they would not go to sleep at regular 730pm bedtime...they'd be bouncing in and out of bed until 9-10pm. So we gave up naps, and moved bedtime up. We head upstairs at 630pm for baths, then straight to bed, usually around 7 or 730. They both go to bed at that time (they are 4 and 2.5) and sleep soundly until 730 the next morning.
It was tough to lose naptime, (I needed that time to myself) but I love having from 730-midnight to myself and my husband!
Good luck

I guess when they don't need it you'll know. The girls will be 4 at the end of
May and they still nap. Just wondering how long I can milk it for.

I meant stop napping?

Sounds like you need one! :surfweb:

I'm 46 and I still like a good nap.

Seriously, though, my kids stopped taking regular naps at 4ish. With DD7 I still occasionally play what we call the "100 game" when I think she needs a nap and she's not so sure. What we do is lay down together. I start counting SLOWLY and quietly to 100 (with at least 10 seconds between counts). If I get to 100 and she's still awake, she can get up. The rules are that she can't open her eyes or talk. If she does, I start over. If she does it again, the game is over and she has to stay down until she goes to sleep, period. She's usually asleep before we get to 40.

DS#1 quit totally at about 2 1/2; would occassionally skip at around age 2. We did rest time though until 3 or 3 1/2. That basically was sitting him on the couch with a special pillow & blanket and letting him watch a movie. It gave ME the break I needed and did calm down any behavior associated with skipping the nap until he got used to it.

DS#2 is 3 and still naps. A good nap (1 1/2-3 hours) most days. I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon.

DS#3 is 19 months. He's been skipping naps (YIKES!) about 4 times a week. It doesn't really affect him at all, which is even scarier. I see the naps totally disappearing soon.

My daughter stopped when she was two - because that is when we took the pacifier from her - and I always say if I had it to do over again I would have waited on the pacifier thing!

My DD never napped. My DS stopped by 2 unless he was in the car and even from about 18 months it wasn't a sure thing.

I stopped my oldest when she was just shy of 3. She stopped her am nap when she was 15 months & we were at Disney & I didn't want to return to the room twice for naps.

I wish I stopped her sooner for the pm nap because she was gonig to bed at 10pm & it was not fun.

I stopped my ds when he ws 2. It wasn't fun for me but he was also staying up later then he should. If I am in the car & it is late afternoon he will try to take a cat nap but I won't let him. He only does that when he is really tired (he is 3 1/2 now).

My youngest is almost 14 months & luckily she still takes both naps most days & goes to bed at about 7. She does fight a nap here & there so I am thinking one of her naps will be stopping soon but I am not sure when.

I have 4 kids. #1 stopped napping at age 18 months. #2 stopped napping at age 3. #3 stopped napping at age 2 1/2. #4 stopped napping at age 2.

DD4 still naps, and needs it even though she thinks she doesn't some days. She won't actually fall asleep 1-3 times a week. Of course, there is the "popping-up" factor. :sad2:

DS 3 yrs 7 months stoped napping about a month and a half ago. He sometimes will nap on weekends. Yesterday and today were so nice that we sepent alot of time outside playing in the yard, taking walks, etc. He also helped Daddy with the weeding so he was very tired and actually came in on his own, laid down on the couch and went to sleep. I wouldn't be too concerned, if your child is not napping consider an earlier bed time. This is what we did/

I have a 4 and 5 year old. They both still nap. My oldest comes home from school, has a snack and heads to bed. She usually sleeps for about an hour and a half. Then I get her up, for dinner. She goes to bed at 8pm each night. Now that I will be homeschooling, our schedule has changed. So I don't know if I will continue to let her nap, only if she needs it.

I noticed that my DD who is almost 2.5 only naps when she has been running around a lot. Sometimes she wants a late nap if she hasn't been active all day but I have to keep her up so she doesn't get off schedule.

My DS (34 months) still takes one 2-3 hour nap a day. I have read that most kids continue to need a nap until they are 4 but each child is different and some continue napping after that age while others stop napping at a younger age.
