Is it still the rule that only names be embroidered on hats? I don't know if anyone knew of Dorian from RI? He inspired the hashtag D-strong? I work with his grandmother and we've been friends for a while. She asked me to bring her something back and I wondered if I could get D-strong on some ears for her. For some reason I remember vaguely a 'rule' against something like that. Thank you.

I never tried, worst case they will just say sorry you can't. You might be able to just bring a set of ears home and let someone local to you embroider it that does hats if that happens.

There's a very long and slightly complicated list of what is and isn't allowed for personalization. Your best best will be to just ask in person.
If the CM at the counter is unsure, ask for a leader and they can either approve/deny, or call back for approval.

I've had a personalization done that had to be specially approved. It took maybe 15 minutes of calls to the powers that be, and a few times of explaining what/why I wanted, but they made a 'This Time Only' exception.

So the basic rule I have been told is $3 embroidery (or whatever the lowest cost is now) is for a full name. No nick names. Like they wouldn't even let me put Liz on mine on the $3 it had to be Elizabeth unless I could show through ID that my name was actually Liz. Now if you pay for premium you can write words as long as they aren't offensive. So for my graduation hat I had to pay premium to write MMC Graduate on it.

Okay, I can understand extra for nicknames or other words, but not Liz? I would think a common nickname for a name shouldn't be a big deal. I mean, legally, my name is Angela, but I have literally never gone by it. My mother decided to give me an "adult" name incase I wanted it when I got older. Spoiler, I didn't. I'm still Angie. I'll be Angie when I'm 90.

Yeah I don't know if it was an over zealous CM but they wouldn't let us get shortened versions of our legal name. Of course this was years ago. I even had issues when I tried to get my boss some ears because the CM that time thought her legal name had to have been a nickname since she had never heard it before. It was Shandar. Sure not a common name but I even explained it was my managers 1st name and I was buying it for a gift and they still said I would have to pay premium. I just went to a different shop and had no issue.

That's weird. In 2012, not only did I get Angie, but my daughter got a nickname that's not even remotely a real name. Maybe we paid premium, but I don't remember being told it would be extra.

This was around 2010-2011 so probably just a CM who took that no nicknames way to close to heart. I did notice the next trip nobody seemed to care.

Good to know info! I will report back just in case anyone is interested in knowing :)
