Names on door magnets??

I made my name magnets. I kinda' don't care. I live and work in a small town. I think the Fantasy has 5k people on it, that's about a third of the population of my town. I am used to people knowing my name, or going "You woke me up at 2 in the morning." But that's me.

If you don't personalize your magnets in some way, they are more likely to walk away.

Having said that, most of the magnets we made up did not have any sort of personalization and they did not walk away (though our friends across the hall did like to rearrange them a lot. :p )

We did have one magnet that was made by a DISigner (he who shall not be named) who only made personalized signs and requested that people not alter them, so we didn't alter the image to take off our name. However, we used a nickname of our last name on that one. Something that was shorter and easier. If your last name is "Smith" "Johnson" or something really common like that, then it might not matter so much. But when you're one of about 10 people in the USA with your last name like me, you tend to be less willing to throw it around. At least that's what I've found.

If it makes you uncomfortable, then just don't put the names on. We have no kids, so that's not an issue for us. We did get some "cast member" type nametag magnets with first names on them about halfway through the cruise in our FE, so we put those out. But if I had kids, and I was concerned about it, I would have not put them out.

I have been looking online at all the really neat magnets to put on your room door. Most of them say the "Smith" Family and then list names. First I was all ready to printout a bunch of Mickey Ears and various other personalized magnets with our names but then I started to get worried about complete strangers knowing our full names. Am I just being paranoid? Should I just stick with non personalized generic Disney character pics??

Maybe just overly cautious I do not see where having you names on the door would have an ill effect, how many " Franklin family" are out there with Suzy,Robbie&Sara? just what info could be obtained that would put your family in jeopardy? Maybe I have been overly naive all 8 Disney cruises but I think you are fine.:thumbsup2 The bottom line is do what YOU feel is comfortable YOU.

On this cruise we personalized ours with first names, and nicknames. we did not use any last names as I felt that was a little TMI.

on our last cruise I did monograms, and our last name, no first names.

I just wanted our stuff to be less likely to "walk away". I know that this can happen as on our last cruise we ended up with magnets on our door that did not belong to us, and i didnt know who to return them to. However all ours remained. kids love to be mischievous (or maybe adults like to act like kids?)

do what is comfortable for you, as there is not right or wrong, it's all for fun!

We use last name rather than first names. I don't want anyone being able to address my kids if they don't already know them.

I, also, use first names only. And room numbers.

As to the personalized ones being less prone to "walking away" - the only magnet I've ever had go missing (and I do a LOT of magnets) was the one that had our names, room number, and sailing dates on it. Right on the front where it would ruin the magnet if you just cut away those parts. :confused3

I did think a lot about this issue before making my own magnets for our first DCL cruise last January. But then I considered, what did it matter if people read our full names? What would they do with this information? Seek us out on the ship? They'd have to be watching our door in order to know what we look like. Search for us on Facebook? Why would they do that? Honestly, I think it's harmless. And for those of us who book GTY rooms, it's hard to use stateroom numbers because we don't know them in enough time. Plus, they could change last minute.

For most of our magnets, I just used our last name. I put them in places where you can't cut it off without ruining the magnet, but I did not use large size font. If a person wanted to see our name, they'd have to stop and actually read the magnet. And from what I could tell, 99% of the people in the hallways are just passing through. When I design door magnets, I try to make them simple and bold so that you don't need to stop and read them. Besides, the names and info on the magnets are usually just for your own memories when you put them up around the house later.

I did not have any problems with our magnets "walking" but totally agree that there is a big risk of non-personalized magnets disappearing. If names make you that nervous, use nick-names or initials.

On our last cruise, we put the magnets with our names on the inside of the door. On the outside we used the stateroom Mickey ears and other Alaska Disney themed magnets to decorate. :)

I don't use personalized magnets because I'm not comfortable with having my kids names or our last names out there. We are definitely more cautious because DH is a cop, and a very good friend is retired FBI that worked missing children cases, and we've heard too many stories about what can happen...so we err on the side of caution. I also don't post our room assignment anywhere pre-trip.

I will be putting our first names only. But we will also reiterate the "stranger" talk--just in case someone does see our kids walk into our room and decide to try something. Not that I anticipate anything bad; it's just a good opportunity to remind our kiddos to be careful!

FWIW, I've seen doors with both first and last, but I never saw the family members themselves (I hardly ever noticed anyone enter their rooms on the Fantasy--it's such a huge ship!)...so it didn't really strike me as a particularly big risk.

OP here... Not sure what we are going to do. I would prefer not to put anything but i also do not want to have our magnets stolen. Maybe first names is the way to go.

Some people have added a little tag to the back of their magnets:

THIS MAGNET STOLEN FROM ROOM XXXX!

They find this helps.:lmao:

I would suggest just putting your stateroom number on them, in a prominent place, so it can't be missed.

Mark me up as one of the paranoid ones. I don't put our names on the stateroom at all. Only my screenname. I never felt comfortable having complete strangers know my childs name and my name. I just imagine the "hey billy, I am a friend of your mother's - Robin. Let me take you for an ice cream."

Sorry it is a job hazard - I deal with fraud, deception, and ID theft on a daily basis.

That's why I don't use first names....or pictures. Even on the Internet, I don't give any info on my offspring - no names, ages, genders, schools, or pictures. Even with an unusual last name, though, just displaying that is no different than when DCL puts an envelope on your Fish....no one can really do anything with it.

I'm so glad that you posted this thread, as I have had the same concerns. To add our names to the doors or not, that remains the question! My kids want to, but I am hesitant. However, their names will be on the FE's, so I guess that is along the same lines. It stinks that we live in a society that we have to be paranoid about such stuff.

I'm still on the fence about names on the magnets. But I'm thinking about just first names.

And I like the idea of "This magnet stolen from XXXX" on the back.

I think whatever I decide I will make magnets with names, just these may only decorate the INSIDE of our room. We can still enjoy them, but I can put my paranoia to rest.

Not paranoid at all. I call my granddaughters by their names and people overhear that. I don't feel that, just because somebody knows their names, it makes them any more unsafe.

I am one of those people that have a last name that is very unique. In fact, I think I am probably the only person in the world with my first and last name and my children are in the same boat. Having said that I have never been cautious about using my last name but I do worry with my children. Specifically my Daughter who is now 20. I don't worry so much about my 8 year old son. The bottom line is anyone with my daughter's first and last name could find her. Actually anyone with just my daughters last name and state could find her(we are the only people in our state with our last name) so I will not be announcing our last name on the door of our cruise ship. I figure better safe than sorry:) If I had a more common name I think I would feel differently.
