Name something you had in your childhood kitchen that isn't there today?

Microwave
At first that seemed odd to me as microwaves were unheard of when I was a child. But my son and daughter in law are in their 4th home, and their first without a microwave. Been in it 3 years and now have 3 kids and seem to do just fine without a microwave. But a lot of the kids meals are made up of raw veggies and fruit, not a lot of hot food, and the food that is hot usually is cooking in the regular oven.

1. A conventional pressure cooker -- not an "insta pot." So many good meals came out of that old cooker.
2. A refrigerator with a freezer that had to be defrosted.
3. I remember my grandma had an actual ice box and I remember the ice man delivering the huge chunk of ice.

Portable dishwasher...my sisters fought and complained and argued and complained and protested and complained.over the kitchen sink... parents gave in.... AND I still had to chop wood to heat the 2 story house

Portable dishwasher

was it the type with a wooden top? in our house it doubled as a portable cutting board.

in my childhood/not in my current kitchen? a percolator, an electric can opener, a bread box, and something i've not seen included in new construction in decades-a bread board (that was part of the cabinetry and pulled out).

I have never lived in a house that didn't have one. We called it a cutting board.
My parents house built in 1960 had two.
The condo built in 1982 that my wife and I lived in had one.
Our house, built in 1979 had one.
And when we remodeled the kitchen in 2014, the custom cabinets we put in came standard with one.

Yes.... also double as a safe place to place the Mason jar 🫙 🫙 🫙 🫙 🫙 hot steam blowing canner full of green beans and peaches and pears...so what happened to concept of the bread box???... availability of cheap bread varieties????

Just a kettle . No fancy coffee machines. My mom was angry when my dad bought a standard coffee machine in my late teens., 😂 She was happy with her kettle and Nescafé.

Also an electronic can opener. I never see those anymore.

@barkley My former apartment had a cutting board built into the base cabinetry. I liked it so much I had one custom built into my current kitchen. I use it for veggie cutting as opposed to bread.

Mom tried cooking with a stovetop pressure cooker and embedded the valve into the ceiling😱. I use an electric pressure cooker now and you’re right; a thing of beauty.

I stabbed the inside of my non frost free freezer while trying to defrost it fast. Punctured the freon line and you could hear the hissing from one end of the apt to the other, 😂 . Finally bought a frost free unit and noticed it needed replacing every ten odd years, hmph.

An egg beater is no longer in my adult kitchen and one of these days I’m going to be bold enough to do away with the microwave and dishwasher; don’t care for either appliance.

YES! I remember my mom canning asparagus and pickles-and the whole house smelling of salsa for days. all those jars came out of the canner and were put on that dishwasher top. dh and I haven't canned in several years but i've still got my mom's old pressure cooker, one I had picked up at a garage sale when we first married and an electric that gets pulled out when we do corned beef.

it was taster's choice in our house (vile bitter stuff).

A landline telephone.

our house was built in '06 and I was surprised to see that the spec builder had put in wiring for landlines but chose NOT to in the kitchen. there's a setup in the living room and the primary bedroom but nothing in the most centrally located room of the house (and yes-i do have landline' service-something my neighbors have come to appreciate when the weather knocks out cell service along with our electricity b/c I can still call in the outages).

fondue maker.....thankfully (I always hated the smell of cheese fondue 😅 )
