I nominate the Lifeboat crews around the country. The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) is a not-for-profit organisation whose members are not paid, yet still put their lives at risk on a routine basis. They save lives, period. And they don't ask for anything in return. No matter what they are doing, as soon as those pagers go off, they run to the stations, don their gear and head out to sea. Sometimes they don't come back at all. Good grief I respect them.

Nurses. They are the ones on the front lines taking care of people, much more so than the doctors these days. They are often overworked and underpaid as well, but they do it because they care.

My wife. There's no one on the planet I respect more. Has the most integrity of anyone I've ever met.

My veterinarian. I have been with her for 40 years. I am blessed to have known her all these years.

Anyone whose job means they may not be coming home at the end of the work day.

Journeymen in the building trades. I owe my career and livelihood, not to mention the roof over my head, to them.

Sadly, that's getting more perilous by the day and it sure does take a certain type of grit.

Every town I have lived in so far has had volunteer fire companies and volunteer ambulance corps. Every time I hear the fire whistle go off, I think about those people who are now interrupting their day, sleep, weekend, holiday, meal, etc to help out the rest of us.
