We may be in the market before too long. We are still up in the air, but we have started talking and we would like to get something with higher than 30mpg.

This would be for a run around town type car but would still need to seat 5, preferably comfortably! Most of the time running around town is only 4 of us and my oldest can sit in the front now, which is a huge help.

Thanks,

Dawn

Oh, I like the little Honda Insight....just looked.....anyone have one of those?

Getting a standard will raise the gas mileage by a few MPGs for the same size engine.

I have a Honda Fit and it has been getting 33 mpg for me lately. It calculates it for me.

It looks small on the outside, but everyone that has been in my car comments on how spacious it is on the inside, including the back seat and storage space in the back.

My '02 Beetle gets 38mpg city.....it's a 1.9L just like the TDI Jetta...... had a TDI Jetta for 10 years, 260,000 miles on it.... sold it last year for $3500 even though it no longer went into 5th gear ....yes diesel used to be more expensive than gas, but these days only about 10 cents more/gallon.....VW makes other TDI model I believe.

Holy cow! 260K miles in 10 years? That is a LOT of miles!

I would love a Beetle, not sure DH would go for one though, it would need to be a different VW.

I have a '10 Corolla that averages about 32 mpg (strictly city driving, stop and go traffic). It averages much 35-36 on interstate road trips.

I have a Honda Insight (2010 I think?) and it gets between 40-45 MPG for me, short hops on interstate and in town. Hubby has the same car (different color), and gets 45 regularly on interstates, sometimes upto 50 depending. 4 is comfy, 5 might be a stretch depending on the size of your people... we've done it with 5 teens without a problem, but not fully hatched people...

Really like it, has little shifters on the wheel that gives little pushes to accelerate for a boost, and feels like a regular sedan type car as opposed to a hybrid. Then again, I was driving SUVs for many years. :) We had to get two cars at the time, and the Toyota Prius was the other we were looking at, but at $10-15k more, it was WAAAAAAAAAY out of our price range. We also looked at the hybrid Honda Civic, but didn't like the way it looked/handled.

I would say 95% of the driving in this car would be around town. The only time I might take it out of town is to go for the weekend with my girlfriends but I would be driving alone or with only one other person.

I will have to go take a look at them.

Yeah, $10K difference is HUGE! I would love a Prius too.

It is hard to find one anymore!

I just read an article that an average of 5% of all cars sold in the US are manual transmission, and that is statistics covering over a 5 year span.

How do you even find out if you can order a car in standard or if it is even offered?

We have one car (Saturn VUE) now that is a stick shift.

my Prius is getting 47 MPG average. I abolutely wouldn't trade that car for anything !!

It's not exactly 30mpg, but my Nissan Versa gets approx 30-32 highway driving and about 24-26 city driving. I've felt like it is a great value gas-wise. It's a 12 gallon tank, so I never spend more than $30-35 (depending on the price of the day) on a tank. With a 25 mile round-trip drive to work every day, plus errands and running around - I can go a little over a week without filling up :)

My mom has a Prius and absolutely loves it. I do too.

My Chevy Aveo got around 36 mpg and seats 5. I just sold it to my son because he needed a good car. I bought a VW Beetle. It only seats 4 and doesn't get as good gas mileage.

My co worker is getting 48mpg (hw driving) in his mid 90s honda civic with manual transmission, not bad for a $1,200 car!

I get 30 in my Mazda 3. It will seat 5 but the 3 in the back would be tight unless they are little. I really enjoy mine though!

Chevy Cruze... If you want excellent mileage, get the Chevy Cruze Eco... it gets over 40mpg... and for the money it will be tough to beat. And its made in the USA.

If you are looking for something more luxurious, the Buick Regal is worth a look. I just bought a Buick Regal Turbo w. Manual Transmission last week. It is fast, very attractive, fun to drive, and practical... and it gets 32mph on the highway!

DH has a 2011 Ford Fiesta that gets 38mpg. I just took it up to TN and round trip cost about 120 bucks. Can't fly for that.

My niece's 02 Beetle gets 19-20 MPH which is the same as my Mustang GT with a V8
