Name Fills using GIMP

Anyone have any words of wisdom for trying to create Name Fills using GIMP? I can't seem to get it figured out. (I am not very familiar with the program, but I'm trying to learn it!) I've been able to personalize some blank mickey heads, but I would love to learn how to do a name fill. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much. I really didn't know what to call it other than "Name fill." Every time I typed that in, google sent me to Disboards!

I know how it is! Oddly, I do better with some names in paint.net, and others in gimp.
