Can't stand people who are always talking about how much money they have. I went to get my nails done by a woman that I have been using for the past 3-4 months because she does really fabulous work at a fabulous price, but I am really thinking about going elsewhere.

She is always dropping info on how much money she has, her cars, house, vacations, and way over the top birthday parties for her kids, how much her boyfriend spends on her, ect. Yesterday, it was the birthday parties, her BMW, exotic vacations. Her cakes cost her between $300-$400 :rolleyes2. I do order mine from a very professional baker too, but try to keep the cost to no more than $50-$60.

I just am really debating on sticking with her much longer. Its really getting on my nerves.:sad2:

What I bet she doesn't talk about is how much money she doesn't have in the bank or how much debt she is in. :D

For me, getting my nails done is a nice stress reliever so if my technician annoys me enough that getting my nails done is not relaxing anymore, I will just go find someone else. There are plenty of good ones out there that are reasonable.

OP, I'd find someone else. It's never fun hearing someone brag and can be quite stressful, which is the opposite of what a nail appt should be.

tell her you are there to relax, and don't want to chat.

I HATE making small talk with the people who do these kinds of things (hairdressers, cashiers, dental hygenists, etc).

That's very unprofessional. I work in the industry (I'm a massage therapist and work at a spa with nail techs) and that is frowned upon in our industry. We make small talk with our guests when THEY talk and that's all.

I highly doubt she makes enough money to afford what she talks about- most nail techs hardly make minimum wage WITH tips and even the higher earners make just $15-$20 per service at about 20-30 a week. Not that her wages have anything to do with her unprofessionalism but it struck me as odd. Obviously she has other forms of income. Good for her but unprofessional.

That's what I was thinking. She's a nail tech. I don't think that's a job most people pick up as a hobby.

Some people are exceptionally good at reading people, so she may have been trying to get you defensive about money, so you'd spend more.
I dunno. Go somewhere else if it bothers you that much.
I kind of figured out a long time ago that I shouldn't let people make me uncomfortable in those kinds of situations. They're the ones who are working, and likely don't make enough money to really afford the products that they sell. I'm the one who is there to spend money.

ETA: I'm not trying to make anyone sound inferior, but I definitely had a problem going into high end stores for a long time, because I felt out of place. Now I have no problem going into Anthrolopologie and spending the entire time in the clearance room, because I love the products, even if I can't afford to pay full retail.

That's what I always think when I hear people say this stuff too! Sure, I'd love a BMW. But I paid cash for my Hyundai after driving my last car for 265,000 and don't have to sweat a car payment each month!

I totally agree. I have nice things and drive a nice car but I don't see a need to brag about it. I think when people brag about having nice things in their life, they see it as a status symbol that makes them feel better about themselves or how other people perceive them.

I mostly just brag when I get a really good deal on something, and it's not so much bragging as excitement.

I only get a pedi done because I'm a dude but from what I hear from the wifey is its hard finding someone that can do nails right. If she's good just walk in with some headphones on or something lol

Excellent advice!

I'm surprised by all the talk of nail techs making a low wage....granted I only personally know one nail tech....but I know her very well and she makes 60% of the cost of the service plus all of the tip money. She told me on an average week she makes around $800.

Either way though, I'd go to someone else.....you are there to relax! I stopped going to a hair dresser I'd been going to for almost 10 years for the same reason. My relax time became her therapy time....I really did not want to hear about all her life issues while I was paying big bucks to have some me time.

Your friend is not in the majority. Read this article:

Maybe your friend makes $800 a week working 50-60 hours a week?

You do realize that article is specifically talking about salons which without stating it directly are clearly hiring people who are illegally working in them without licenses or work visas? They are discussing salons who essentially don't pay employees who then live off the tips only and even pay to be allowed to work there. (as in don't turn me in, here's some money)

The article also states that in NY city (100% of the salons they write about) the cost for a manicure is less than half the national average.
So generally speaking the majority of manicurists in the country are doing services valued twice that of the article. At a minimum then they are making roughly twice the tips.

Really you are looking at an industry where a legal worker is either being paid minimum wage (plus tips) or they are keeping 100% plus tips, buying fairly inexpensive supplies and paying some percentage for rent. Manicures, which they focus on, are also the cheapest service offered and usually not the majority of services. Fake nails and fill-ins usually cost more and are the majority of service. Being a nail tech in a booth rental salon means most of your services + tips are averaging at least $30- so even with 20 appointments/week you are looking at $600 - $240(~40% rent to be high) - $50 (supplies?) = $310 or $15/hour after expenses for a part time job picking your own hours on a week with less expensive services. I picked $30 because around here you can get a fill-in for around $25 so $30 includes a $5 tip. If you did pedicures or new sets that week- it all just goes up from there (local pedicures are $40+ and $10 is like a base tip rate). That friend taking home $800/week is likely not far off from average.

$800 a week would not support an extravagant lifestyle even if that was what the OP's nail tech is making. OP, she is probably exaggerating her life, or as another poster said, she is deeply in debt living that lifestyle...honestly, I'd feel sorry for her. And I'd be finding another place to get my nails done!
