My 12 year old daughter is an avid reader, and I was looking into buying her some mystery books about Disney to help her get excited about our trip (great for the car ride!!). Here's the ones I've found:

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom - Cory Doctorow
Kingdom Keepers
Mystery at Walt Disney World - Carole Marsh

Has anyone read any of these? Would you recommend them or no? Also, do you know of any others that would be good??

Thanks!!!

I have an almost 10 yr old daughter (awesome reader) that just finished Kingdom Keepers. She LOVED it, couldn't put it down. Her teacher is going to borrow it over spring break. My daughter just loved the book so much, she is now reading Peter and the Star Catchers by the same author. This book kind of explains Peter Pan - takes place before the time of the movie setting. She is loving that one now.

We read the Carol Marsh book about a year or so ago. I was so excited to have found it, but it was kind of creepy - about kids being kidnapped and held in the castle. Kind of a yucky lame let down, in my opinion. It started out cute and interesting, but just went downhill. It is probably beneath a good 12 year old reader, also. Maybe more like a 3rd grader book.

Another she read recently is the story about Tink (by the Ella Enchanted author) can't think of the title, but she just really enjoyed that one, also.

I bet your daughter would be enthralled with the Kingdom Keepers, though. I thought Down and Out in the MK was a bit more geared toward adults, due to subject matter, but I may be wrong.

Kingdom Keepers is GREAT. One note here though, although if she likes mysteries it shouldn't be a problem. A lot of the book is in the MK and on rides and the evil character of Maleficent (and others) use the rides and characters from the rides to cause havoc. Make sure your child won't be bothered by riding the rides after she's read scary things about them. One of the ladies I teach with recommended it to me and I told her if I was scared on Small World next time I went I was going to be so mad at her! (The dolls come to life in the book...) It's a great book though, very creative. Just make sure you know how the story will or won't affect her.

I have read Kingdom Keepers and Peter and the Starcatchers. I recommend them both highly.

Although, I should say that my all time favorite book is the original Peter Pan by Sir. James M. Barrie. I was worried when I saw the book Peter and the Starcatchers because well, you just shouldn't mess with a classic. But, I did read it and I loved it. The authors provided a neat way of how Peter came to be. But, keep in mind that it does not follow the original and it strays from some of Barries original concepts.

That being said, after she finishes Starcatchers, have her read Peter Pan too! Disney strayed from the original story a bit too and it's always fun to find out what the real story is!

If she reads these, let us know what she thinks about them!

BTW, you should read them too!!

I bought the Carol Marsh one for our boys when we decided to go and both read it in no time at all...it's pretty simplistic for the 10-12 crowd. They did both like it though.

I didn't know about the others and might have to give them a try if I can get Amazon to get it to me by the end of the week!
THANKS

I agree about mstery. We started it with 4 year old DD and never finished (it was a bit above her.) DH finsihed reading it and said the same thing you did, kind of creapy, not as fun as it should be.

I haven't read Kingdom keepers yet, but am considering it (DD is too young right now.) I think I am going to look into it again though. (for me.)

OK, down and out is really for adults only (at least what I read of it on line amazone.) I could not get past the whole "crack smoking pipes like ciggerates and 100 year old man dating a 17 year old.) It was really creapy for me. I didn't like my beloved WDW being that werid. Some people really like it, but I wouldn't want my 14 year old niece reading it (and she reads some strange stuff.) Read some of it before buying, please.

I actually just finished Kingdom Keepers today! I literally could not put it down. It came every where with me since Sunday night. Granted, I'm 19, but I absolutly loved the book. It's a really quick read for any adult, and for a younger child, it wouldn't be hard either. The only "scary" moment in the book was with the dolls from Small World. Even that's not scary, just kind of daunting when you think about how life-like everything already is.
My only complaint on the entire book was the ending. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but I still loved it and already have people lined up to borrow it after how much I've been ranting and raving about it. :cool1:

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom - Cory Doctorow

This one is NOT appropriate for a 12 year old. It's not a mystery so much as science fiction - and not very good science fiction at that. A bit too "violent" and weird for a 12 year old, IMO.

WE also have read both and loved them. My kids liked Starcatchers more though but they love Peter Pan!

DD12 LOVED Kingdom Keepers! She read it cover to cover - just couldn't put it down.

I'll have to look into the Starcatchers and Tink one too for her.

Who is the author of Kingdom Keepers!? Please advise! Many thanks! ~Daxx's Wife

Ridley Pearson also coauthor of Peter and the Starcatchers another great book.

Another thumbs up for "Kingdom Keepers"...DD12 just read it last week and could not put it down. She says it is one of her favorite all-time-ever books and believe me, she reads ALL THE TIME! We'll have to try "Peter and the Starcatchers"...I tried to get her to buy it at WDW last spring but she decided not to. Have fun!
