On our way to Disney this year ( driving form Toronto area) we plan to stop in Myrtle Beach for 2 days. Can anyone recommend North Myrtle Beach or Myrtle Beach. What is the difference?

Can anyone advise me about cover at the beaches. My 2 daughters and I are VERY prone to serious burns and usually do beaches in the evening after dinner only. I was hoping to do a full day at the beach this year. This might be possible with sufficient "covering". I have been looking on line and I am not clear on what is available...umbrella vs canopy. We are going in late September. Does anyone have any info on what is available on the beach this time of year. ( we read info about the canopy-style coverings being banned??)

In my opinion, North Myrtle is more family oriented and laid back while Myrtle Beach area is more party and teens.

Myrtle Beach has a strip that's popular with tons of little beach shops all the way down.

North Myrtle has a few nice shopping areas and restaurants and it's not far from the more busy areas of Myrtle.

I personally prefer to stay in North Myrtle and I'll drive the 15 minutes to the strip or buffet or something if need be which for us, really wasn't necessary most of the time.

Thanks AAAarcher!! I started a search on Myrtle for next summer. I'm not familiar with it, and you've given me a starting point with the advice about North Myrtle.

OP, I burn too. You have my sympathies. We just got back from Va Beach, and like you, my strategy was to get on the beach late in the day.

aaarcher...Thanks for the advice. I definitely like the idea of a more family friendly beach so it sounds like North Myrtle is for us!!

Are you looking for a hotel/resort or condo type accomodations recommendations?

Minniebeth...we would stay in either type of accomodations.

We are 2 adults and our 9 and 18 year old daughters.

It depends on what you are looking for, and what you want to spend, and there are a lot of different types of accomodations that appeal to different people, but we love and would highly recommend these properties:

They are a little more expensive, but in Sept. would be an off peak time so the pricing is a little more reasonable. You can look at the reviews and photos on Trip Advisor. It is a great location, not far from all the major places/attractions.

I would drive another couple hours south and stay at Disney Hilton Head Resort ;)

Yah...prob N Myrtle. My favorite is Garden City Beach (about 10 miles south of myrtle) Quiet but close enough to myrtle for all the fun stuff :thumbsup2

The weather will be cooler. Although being from Toronto it will prob be perfect :goodvibes (I am a southern sissy. This AM I had a sweater on because I was freezing. It was 67 out :lmao:)

Not sure about canopy being banned??? :confused3

A little longer than a couple of hours to Hilton Head:lmao:

DW is from Myrtle Beach....agreed NMB is a little slower paced--as is Garden City which is South, but there's more "stuff" around North Myrtle.

Your choices are numerous in both areas...

It's true that HHI is further than 2 hrs. from MB.
We drove it twice this summer, and it took us between 3 and 4 hrs. for each trip. The first time we did it, we drove the I95 route. The second time, we took the coastal route through Charlestons and Beaufort.

What's nice about HHI (from the Disney resort there) is that it puts you at about 8 1/2 hrs. from WDW from there.

Definately agree with the N. Myrtle Beach location~

If I were looking at North Myrtle, could anyone recommend a weekly condo or cottage rental? The more specific the better. I'm used to Sandbridge in Virginia Beach, which has 3 condo buildings, and the rest are free-standing cottages. It's TINY compared to Myrtle!!!

Try Kingston Plantation. It is between MB and NMB. They have an Embassy Suites Hotel, high rise ocean front condos and villas that are a short walk to the beach. We've stayed in the 2 bedroom villas a number of years and really enjoy it. It is also central to all the popular destinations.

The beach has umbrella rentals during the summer months, but I'm not sure about late Sept.

If you get a chance to go into Murrells Inlet, below MB, try the Marsh Walk. Several restraunts on the inlet, very relaxing. Drunken Jacks and Creek Ratz are our favorites...Also Brookgreen Gardens is nice, as is Huntingdon Beach State park (beach) across the street. Pay beach, I think $10 for a car load, but clean and very nice

I rented and had a great deal from www.condo-world.com.

I can't remember which one we personally rented from but it didn't look too fabulous on the outside in the picture, but was great in person. We paid about $800 for a 3 bedroom condo in May for a week. It was spacious, had the kitchenette, living room, bathrooms for each bedroom and a balcony. I loved it and for the price it was excellent. It was right on the beach and about 2 minutes up the road from Broadway At The Beach.

ETA: We stayed at Windy Hill Dunes. The pictures isn't super great but the beach was clean as were the rooms and halls and they had a pool and lazy river and kiddy pool. I'd stay again.

North Myrtle Beach rents beach umbrellas during the summer. I don't know if the rentals are available all year. Most people bring their own beach umbrellas or tents (the kind with no sides).

Look at Prince Resort in NMB.

We just returned from a great week vacation on Pawleys Island, about 1/2 hour south of MB. Very relaxing and family oriented. The beach was awesome! PM me is you want more info.

karenos;)
