Myrtle Beach in December

My son is running in the USATF Nation Jr Olympic meet at Myrlte Beach next Sat. We will be there from Fri afternoon and leaving Monday AM. He races on Sat. So we have Sunday free. Can anyone suggest some fun things to do in the area this time of year. Maybe something that would give us a sense of the local "culture". He is 17 if that helps. Any restaurants we should seek out while are are there or places we should STAY AWAY from?? Thanks for any one who has info! Also I would like to keep our entertainment that day as budget as possible as this trip really wan't something I had put into our budget.

Broadway at the Beach - lots to do there (tons of shops, restaurants - Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood, Johnny Rockets, etc. plus Wonderworks, MagiQuest, IMAX theater, etc.) In saying that - bring your pocketbook $$. However, just walking around looking at stuff is fun too (esp. if you have never been before.)

Broadway at the beach also gets my vote but there are also LOTS of great outlet malls if you want to do some Christmas shopping.

If you have Saturday Night Free, there are tons of Musical shows and right now they are Christmas themed. Really fun.

There is also the new Ferris wheel on the boardwalk. It is the biggest on the east coast I think. Quick fun thing to do.

Lots of chain restaurants and seafood buffets. These can be fun to try but they are loaded with fried foods (just depends if this suits you or not) and can be rather expensive. We like Bennets the best of these. There is also a Landrey's at broadway as well as a Hard Rock, Johnny Rockets and lots of other fun choices. Miniature golf everywhere, thought some may be closed for the season, there is alligator adventure (small but well done zoo), and a nice regular mall.

Going to Myrtle Beach and eating at a chain restaurant is a sin! Myrtle Beach is a mecca of good dining at fantastic local owned restaurants. I think it is 1500 restaurants in the Grand Strand area. I definitely would not go to a run of the mill chain.

Like fried shrimp? I have to give a huge plus to a place at Pawleys Island we stumbled into. Pawleys Island Cafe and Deli. Ate shrimp for a week and this was the best I had. Very lightly seasoned battered and the shrimp were large and solidly meaty.

That is not to be confused with another highly recommended restaurant, the Pawleys Island Tavern. We were looking for the Tavern and couldn't find it, and ended up at the Cafe and Deli which was along the road blocking Pawleys Island Tavern. Pawleys Island Tavern was the best meal we had all week.

The whole strip along the water at Murrells Inlet is also highly recommended. Drunken Jacks, Capt. Daves, Creek Ratz, Dead Dog Saloon, all suppose to be excellent. We ate at Creek Ratz and can personally say it was excellent.

Prices for dining in Myrtle Beach is very reasonable. $15 for shrimp dinner is pretty common. You would probably pay more at chain restaurants for lesser quality food than with the local owned restaurants. Definitely go to local owned restaurants in the Grand Strand area.

(Walls, tables, chairs, doors, candy dispensers, everywhere!) We love going. Only there isn't much else to do there unless you want to do winter water sports.

We just went to the new pirates show a few weeks ago.

It's a little on the pricey side, but it was so much fun. We try to do Medieval Times when we go, but this one might top it. They had a really fun preshow about an hour or so before the regular show.

Fantastic restaurant in North Myrtle Beach is Benny Rappas. It's near 15th Street(?) according to DH. It looks like a hole in the wall but... the food is phenomenal Italian.
