MyMagic + has increased park capacity......here's how:Link

If the old Fastpass system allowed people to get out of the queues and into stores and other places in the park, the MyMagic+/Fastpass+ system effectively is trying to put visitors back into those queues, or any other spaces it can to more evenly distribute visitors so that no one part of a park becomes overloaded.

This is a misunderstanding of what they're doing. Longer standby waits are a side effect of some riders having priority boarding with FastPass+. But this is not what Disney was talking about. It's getting people to those rides at all at times when the ride would normally be sitting mostly idle is what Disney is doing ... effectively USING the capacity that they have.

That they talk about Maelstrom in the article is telling. Many guests didn't even know there was a ride in Norway. FP+ is making that more visible to them. Now that ride is being used to better affect, absorbing crowds. It's not just about getting them into lines, but it's about getting them onto rides that are sitting idle. "Walk on" rides mean wasted capacity for Disney.

Very interesting entry from Theme Park Insider..............

Interesting indeed. When he says you can make FP+'s at one park, or at multiple parks if you have a park hopper option, that's wrong, though, right? At least for now. As I understand it, FP+'s may be made in advance for one park only. Once you "use up" those three advance-booked FP+'s, one is free to make whichever FP's they like, at any park. But the "advance book" FP+'s may only be at one park, per day, at least for now. Is that correct?

Yup.

I do think that's what the article writer meant, even if awkwardly phrased. I liked his "cups" analogy. Distributing crowds amongst rides that would otherwise be sitting empty is a good idea, I think, even if it means fewer "walk-on" rides for those of us who seek them out, knowing they are likely empty.

I read this earlier today. I like the analogy of pouring water into cups of various depths. Makes a lot of sense.
