Woo Hoo!!!

I work for an aerospace company that has offices throughout the US. A few years ago they decided to change the work week to 4-9-4, which means that four days of the week, people work 9 hours, and every Friday they work 4 hours. Now, a LOT of those employees begin work at 6am - that means that by 10am, they get to go home - other employees who start at 5am get to leave every Friday they go home at 9am. (I would love those hours!)

In California, we have labor laws, so all of the employees whose time is monitored (either timeclocks or timecards) had to vote whether they wanted to go to the non-standard 4-9-4 work week. Employees in Palmdale & Rancho Bernardo (near San Diego) voted yes. However, the employees in El Segundo (where I work) voted no -- so everywhere, except El Segundo, worked the 4-9-4 work week.

Well, for whatever reason (I think maybe to entice the Generation X'ers to work for us) the Company decided to see if the employees would agree to a 9/80 work week. That means that for 9 days we work 9 hours a day, and then get every other Friday off. They had the vote today, and it passed! So, beginning 9/23, we are going to the 9/80, and I will get a 3-day weekend every other weekend!

You know that Charlie Brown cartoon movie (yes, I'm slightly changing topic here) ... well, you know that Halloween one where they have a Halloween party, and Schroeder plays the piano ... well, he plays an upbeat tune and Snoopy starts dancing and dancing ... and then he plays a sad tune, and Snoopy starts sobbing ... then he plays the happy tune, and Snoopy raises his face to the sky and dances away cuz that makes him so happy...

I'm doing the Snoopy happy dance right now. :thumbsup2

That is awesome MJ!!!!!!!

A lot of businesses around me are having summer hours. 9 hour days 4 days a week and out at noon on Friday. I wish our company would do that, alas it's not ment to be.

Congrats to you! :thumbsup2 I would have to say that I am extremely jealous. My perk is that I get to work 9.5 hours a day/5 days a week. Nice of them, huh? :teeth:

I did this at a company I worked for in Georgia, wish I could do it now, I miss my three days off every other weekend. Don't for get on your Fridays you do work, you only have to work 8 hours. And due to the labor laws for the timecard/timeclock people we had to make sure that four of those hours were before noon and the other four where after noon, (that was our cutoff) because legally if you worked over 40 hours a week they had to pay you overtime.

Do you work for Northrop Grumman? I know they have facilities in all the places you mentioned. I worked there for 13 years, three in Pico Riveria, and 10 in Palmdale on the B-2 Stealth Bomber.

Woo hoo! That sounds awesome!!! I hope you enjoy your new work hours :)

Hey wait a minute. I have those same hours. And the company has offices in those places. I'm thinking we work for the same company. But here they aren't trying to change the hours. It doesn't matter what hours are specified, people come in all hours of the day and all days of the week anyway. I like having half day Fridays, but I don't know, a three day weekend every so often sounds great also. Congrats!

this was realy popular at the government employer i had in california. the only thing that can be a downside is-any holiday that falls on your non 9/80 or 8 hour day-(if you get paid for holidays)-you owe the company 1 hour for. any sick time off is taken at 9 hours per day vs. 8 (and since we accrued based 8 hour days you had to make sure you had a couple extra hours in reserve).

i always found the debate over 'is schedual a or b the best one, monday off or friday off?-interesting. some people loved having the friday that fell before most of the monday holidays off, others said they'de rather have the knowledge that any week that had a monday holiday they would only be working 3 days. i think the most in demand day was the monday most of the legal holidays fell on-they got the day off anyway and earned 8 hours of cto they could use any day of the week (i had folks i supervised who did this and saved it to take a long vacation tagged onto their 9/80 day off such that they did'nt use up any of their vacation time-saved it for a whopping long one down the line :thumbsup2 ).

when i retired my employer offered 9/80 and 4/10-the only provision was you had to have 6 1/2 hours of the schedual fall between 9 am and 3:30 pm-so you were available for clients.

Yup - I work at Northrop Grumman - El Segundo office, and we've been the only ones in the past few years who've been working a standard workweek while everyone else has been working the 4-9-4.

I should have said that the 9/80 was offered to the El Segundo workers - I don't know about the other sites in California or the rest of the country; and this is for the Integrated Systems sector. I don't know about the other sectors. :)

Congrats! That would be an awesome schedule!. DH works a 50 hour week every week, 10 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Congratulations! I worked 9/80 at my last job (before I started to stay home with the kids). I loved it! That Friday off was great for scheduling doctor's appointments, having service people come to the house, and running errands without all of the weekend traffic.

We used to have 9/100, and it was great! I had gotten on schedule B, so every Friday I either got paid or was off!

The company cut it after about 10 years, which was NOT a popular decision.
