Well, I giving low-carb a try. I don't have an Atkin's book but I'm giving all the hints and links from my other thread a try and I started this morning with a low-carb breakfast. Here's what I had:

2 1/2 eggs scrambled with canola oil

one slice of American cheese

I entered it all on my food diary on www.fitday.com and was surprised to see that the calories weren't too much higher than my usual breakfast of grape nuts and 2% milk (297 verses 260) Here's my pie chart.

How did I do? What changes should I make...butter instead of canola oil? Thanks again for all your help and advice and today I'm running to the store to pick up some things. And hopefully an Atkin's book too.

You're doing great! Using butter on Atkins is a good idea. All in all, you're on the right track and your pie chart looks great!

Keep in mind that American cheese has more carbs than "real" cheese (cheddar, colby, swiss, etc.). You may want to switch cheese eventually.

You're on the right track! Keep it up! :bounce:

I guess I should have gone with the provolone in my fridge instead. I went to the mall and bought the Atkins book. I didn't look at it yet.

Then I went to the grocery store and bought some things.

mixed nuts

a small ring of cooked shrimp with the seafood sauce in the middle. The shrimp had no carbs but the seafood sauce has 7g per ounce. I guess that is pretty high when you need to keep it at 20, huh?

bacon to go with my eggs

BBQ sauce that only had 1g of Carbs ("Stubbs Moppin' Sauce" never had before www.stubbsbbq.com)

butter

other meats

bag of salad (skipped the bag of matchstick carrots this time...I was surprised to see they had a lot of carbs.)

I stopped over to look at the low-carb bars...What does it mean when the front says in big, bold letters, "Only 2 effective Carbs!!" But when I turn it over and read the nutrition label it says,
"total Carb: 24g??" I bought one but didn't eat it yet.

I can't wait to sit down and read the book.

On the nutrition label, under total carbs they are counting lots of things. One thing is fiber. You can subtract fiber from the total carbs, because it doesn't get absorbed into your bloodstream. That fiber does NOT count toward your 20g of carbs per day.

The other thing they are counting in total carbs is sugar alcohols, like malitol, sorbitol, and a few other things ending in "ol". These are counted as carbs but most people do not absorb them so again. they are not counted in your 20g of carbs per day.

Whatever's left are the true sugars that your body will absorb. That is the 2 grams on the front of the label - effective carbs or carbs that will "affect" your blood sugar. These are the carbs you have to count toward your carbs for the day.

Hope this helps! :sunny:

Wow, what a quick answer, thanks! What a low carb-newbie I am huh?

We were ALL new at one point or another! I'm always glad to help. :sunny: Keep asking those questions because there are lurkers out there who are also learning. ::yes::

Our Doreen is always so helpful. Sounds like you have a good beginning at eating low carb. Read the book, it's very enlightening.
